The Monster Hunter Superdrop is a superdrop in the Secret Lair product range and a continuation of the alternate art Secret Lair Drop Series. It originally was planned to become available for purchase from the Wizards of the Coast webshop secretlair.wizards.com on December 1, 2025.[2] However, the release date has been moved to 2026 beacuse the product will be revamped.[3]
Description
The original planned Superdrop contains four Universes Beyond drops based on Monster Hunter. Monster Hunter is a Japanese media franchise centered on a series of fantasy-themed action role-playing video games, beginning with the first installment Monster Hunter for the PlayStation 2, released in 2004. Multiple devices are used to play the series, including personal computers, home consoles, portable consoles, and mobile devices. The series is developed and published by Capcom.
The games are primarily action role-playing games. The player takes the role of a Hunter, slaying or trapping large monsters across various landscapes as part of quests given to them by locals, with some quests involving the gathering of a certain item or items, which may put the Hunter at risk of facing various monsters. As part of its core gameplay loop, players use loot gained from slaying monsters, gathering resources, and quest rewards to craft improved weapons, armor, and other items that allow them to face more powerful monsters. All main series titles feature multiplayer (usually up to four players cooperatively), but can also be played in single-player mode.
The planned release was revealed on November 13, 2025, by the source code of the Secret Lair website.[4] A day later, additional information could be found in a confusing press release by Capcom, that provided only partial details and no images.[5] The press release was retracted within a couple of hours. An official announcement followed on November 18.[2]
The bundles were planned to be available in both English and Japanese. Customers were to receive a foil Sol Ring Secret Lair Promo with art by Lē Yamamura for each bundle purchase. Surge foil editions of the cards had been planned to be available exclusively in the Amped State Surge Foil Bundle.[2]
Reactions
At its reveal, players were underwhelmed by the low reprint value.[6] “The Hunter” drop was calculated to be worth about $20–$30, but the other three were less than $10 dollars each.[7] Monster Hunter fans considered the flavor text to be bland, questioned the attributed creature types, and noted the glaring absence of equipment cards which would have represented a core element of the game. A final nail in the coffin was that the card Champion of Kotoko misspelled the main setting of Kokoto in its name.[8]
Although all these were valid criticisms, they didn't differ much from complaints that earlier Secret Lair drops had received. This had never stopped Wizards of the Coast from releasing those drops as planned or selling them them out immediately.
Postponement and reworking
On November 26, 2025, Wizards of the Coast announced that, due to the disappointed reactions, they would postpone the release of the Monster Hunter Superdrop and would rework it entirely. The reworked Superdrop is expected to be released in 2026.[3]
It was widely speculated that this decision was influenced by Capcom.[9][10]
