Shenmeng (Chinese: 蜃梦), the Plane of Mountains and Seas (Chinese: 山海時空), is the plane featured in the Global Series: Jiang Yanggu & Mu Yanling set and March of the Machine Commander.[2] It is inspired by the Chinese Classic of Mountains and Seas, a compilation of mythic geography and myth.[3] It is home to the planeswalkers Jiang Yanggu and Mu Yanling.

Description

The world is characterized by its many mountains, forests, plains, lakes, rivers, and oceans. It has rich flora and fauna.

Locations

  • The Arrow Bamboo Forest Green mana - a forest with a welcoming appearance that hides its deadly hostility, which was pacified by the arrival of Jiang Yanggu.[4]
  • Cloud Dream Lake Blue mana - a clanhold which Yanling and Li Shan were headed to when he collapsed and disappeared.[5] The rainbows seen above the lake are nothing more than the ritual dancing of the Vivid Flying Fish.
  • The Dark Sea of Penglai Blue mana - located in the north. Yanling searched for Li Shan there.[5][6]
  • The Easternmost Valley - the first place Yanggu can remember.[5][7][8]
  • The Eternal Divided Realm - located in the south. Yanling searched for Li Shan there.[5][6]
  • Mount Zhaoyao Red mana - represented in Timber Gorge (Global Series: Jiang Yanggu & Mu Yanling), it is a forest of stones near the Western Seas, that reaches the clouds and land of wondrous treasures and strange animals.
  • Mu Yanling's village - destroyed by a crushing wave amid the roars of snarling beasts when Mu Yanling was a child. Her life was saved and she was taken in by Li Shan.[5]
  • The Northern Mountains Red mana - deep in this mountain range linger the Earth-Origin Yak, who channel the power of the earth.
  • Ten Wizards Mountain Red mana[5][8] - home to a large number of birds and covered by waterfalls. This is where Mu Yanling met Jiang Yanggu.
  • Village of the Jiuli Clan[5] - Yanggu's foster clan
  • The Western Seas Blue mana - near them lies Mount Zhaoyao.

On the name of the plane

  • The Global Series's name in Mandarin Chinese is 幻境奇谭, which can be translated as "Tales of Huanjing." Huanjing itself is a generic term used to convey the idea of "fantasy land." It's unclear if Huanjing was originally intended to be the name of the plane.
  • While the name of the "Plane of Mountains and Seas" was coined as such on this wiki, it entered canon when it was mentioned in Greg Weisman's 2019 novel War of the Spark: Ravnica (page 193). It was subsequently back-translated into Chinese.
  • Later, during March of the Machine, Ten Wizards Mountain was printed as a Planechase card, featuring the name Shenmeng. This was later confirmed by Jay Annelli and Ethan Fleischer to be the name of this plane.[9][10]
  • Shenmeng was named by cultural consultant Tan Shao Han. Its meaning was intentionally loose; "Meng" referred to 梦 (dream), with "Shen" being possibly read as either 沈 (a ritual sacrifice involving the drowning of animals), 深 ("of depths"), or 神 ("of gods or spirits").[11] The official Chinese translation instead used 蜃 (a mythical sea monster known for creating mirages).[12]
