Mercadia City is the capital city on the plane of Mercadia.

Description

Mercadia City is the largest settlement of any size on the plane of Mercadia. It is located atop the bizarre upside-down Mount Mercadia. Essentially a trading empire, Mercadia is filled with many markets, where anything can be found to be bought and sold. The rules of physics are bent in the plane, and no one can ever travel straight from east to west across the inverted mountain; rather, they will go in circles around the same blocks and marketplaces unless they turn in the opposite direction of the direction they wish to go.

The Lower Market, a lesser settlement of traveling traders, sits underneath the shelter of the upside-down mountain's top. Large piles of trash were thrown from the upper city land in vast heaps, forming a makeshift barrier surrounding the bottom of Mount Mercadia. During the Kyren rule, criminals were occasionally executed by being buried under piles of waste and refuse dropped on them from above.

Vast plains surround Mercadia City, dotted with peasant farmsteads built in a flat-roofed, conical style. Magical dust storms in this area can transport travelers to the west.

Locations

  • The Cliffside Market - the market running along the edge of the city, thick with booths, crowds, and noise.[1][2]
  • The High Market Colorless mana - the market crowning the top of Mercadia City, where the most exotic goods can be found.[3]
  • The Lower Market Red mana - situated beneath the inverted mountain inside a ring of trash.[2][4]
  • The Tower of the Magistrate Colorless mana - seat of rule over Mercadia, placed directly in the center of the city.[2]

History

Origins

Mercadia City is the site where numerous Thran nobles were taken by the planeswalker Dyfed to save them from the political turmoil of their home during Yawgmoth's uprising. They were left in the care of goblins, who had reliable survival skills. Many years later, the Thran refugees built the powerful city of Mercadia.

Revolution on Mercadia

Mercadia City was ruled by a venerated magistrate, who was a puppet leader secretly controlled by the Kyren, descendants of the original goblins who had evolved increased intelligence and size compared to their ancestors. However, after the Revolution on Mercadia, the Kyren were deposed and exiled, and a new regime of peace was put in place.

Rift Era

In 4308, more than 100 years later, Karona traveled to Mercadia carrying Sash and Waistcoat. In this time, the merchants of Mercadia tended towards overweight and wore yellow robes of many layers and were wreathed in clouds of perfume, much like the earlier Magistrates had. Then, Karona encountered "the Masters", which were mechanical goblins with giant metal claws, fused into the bodies of frog mounts, which also were mechanically modified. The goblin Masters wore beaded necklaces which marked their station, and stood aboard wicked flying machines. One Master mentioned that Cho-Arrim, who left the forest, was condemned to death. Karona killed one of the Masters and left.[5]
