The Cho-Arrim are a people living in the Rushwood on Mercadia.[1]
Description
The Cho-Arim storytellers tell of "the Peliam", their origin story, which tells them where everything came from and to where they would return when they died. The fight was between two gods, Ramos and Orhop. Each had pulled down a piece of the heavens, and each sought to use it to best the other. Hassno the Unrighteous was a demon who pretended to support Ramos in the conflict, but in the end, she betrayed him. Ramos defeated her and so won the war. In the end, Ramos triumphed, and Orhop, the evil god, was vanquished. Ramos grieved for the ruin he had brought to his world. And so, he gathered the people of forest and plain and mountain and set them on his back and carried them to a new world, a better world. But when he arrived, he was struck from the sky and fell in three great pieces — soul, mind, and body. Borne atop his soul, the tribes of the Cho-Arrim landed in the forests. Those atop his mind — the Saprazzans — fell into the Outer Sea. And those atop his body — some fell from the fiery corpse and struck the coastal lands, and they became the Rishadans. Those who held on to the blazing body were slain and fell to guarding the bones of Ramos. That was why when the Cho-Arrim would die, they would return to the heavens, the place from which they came. Once there, they would be joined in the Great River that ran among the stars until at last it fell off the edge of the world into the great, everlasting dark. Though the children of Ramos — Cho-Arrim, Rishadan, Saprazzan — were scattered through forest, plain, and sea, someday would come the Uniter. He would be a great metal serpent. When he returned, all the children of Ramos would be joined as one and would triumph over their enemies.
Much of the Cho-Arrim diet consists of fish, supplemented by fruits, berries, and vegetables collected from various parts of the forest. They do not eat much red meat.[1]
History
The Cho-Arrim once were a group of human and ogre rebels on Mercadia that fought against the oppression by the Mercadians and worshipped the dragon engine Ramos. They were assisted in their fight by ogres. After the Phyrexian invasion, they were joined by the healer Orim through her marriage with Cho-Manno. For many years, they lived separately from the people of Mercadia City, under the boughs of the Rushwood. At some point, the village of the Cho-Arrim was struck by a plague, killing many of its inhabitants. The villagers blamed the denizens of Mercadia City for this, as city scouts had been spotted roaming the woods nearby. A war between the Cho-Arrim and Mercadia City seemed likely, but the outcome of this conflict is not known.[2]
