Marhault Elsdragon was the half-elven general of the kentsu during the time of Lady Caleria's uprising against the Empire of Madara on Dominaria.[1]

Description

Marhault Elsdragon had a clear, languid voice. He was in command of the imperial army for 12 years, twice as long as anyone else had ever held the post. He was a large man, but slender, tall, and sinewy. Elsdragon wore black and gold armor polished to a mirrorlike sheen, and long rich brown hair swept straight back from his forehead gathered at the nape of his neck to expose tall pointed ears. He was rumored to have elf blood in him, an unusual feature on Madara, but kept his past a secret. He was a powerful man in charge of the emperor's most devastating military forces. He was a skilled strategist who possessed various kinds of battle magic. He was loyal to Emperor Nicol Bolas in every way, and gladly followed any order that he received from the dragon.[2][3]

It was said of Elsdragon that he followed a strict philosophy, never letting emotions cloud his thoughts. And that "No chance observer could imagine the rage in his heart."[4] An obscure text from uncertain provenance says the following about him: A legendary elven warrior whose travels were well-known in ancient times, Elsdragon was changed forever when his ship was burned. Although restrained and civil in normal times, he is a ferocious fighter that embodies chaos in times of war.[5]

History

Marhault Elsdragon followed only the word of the Emperor of Madara, Nicol Bolas. So when Ramses Overdark came to Eldragon's camp during the Madara-Edemi War to make certain the General would not interfere with his plans in getting Tetsuo Umezawa killed, Marhault simply stated he would only act if the Emperor bade him to. On that same visit, Overdark purposefully antagonized the short-tempered Aerathi berserker Jorgan Hage, one of Elsdragon's Marshals. Ramses then lured Hage into a trap, ambushing him and corrupting him with black magic, secretly converting him to one of his servants. After the champion failed to convince the rulers of the Edemi Islands to relent, the Emperor marshaled the kentsu, setting Elsdragon to the task of killing the leaders of Kusho and Argenti.[2]

After having Champion Umezawa be put under his direct leadership, Elsdragon arranged for Wasitora to stay away from his troops as they passed through Sekana village, and left for Kusho. After meeting with some initial resistance, the kentsu conquered the island, but Elsdragon was told by Ayesha Tanaka that the island's defenders had all gone to Argenti to arrange a collective defense there. Elsdragon then brought the kentsu to Caleria's island, where they first had to battle through the woods of Magnus. After Ayesha Tanaka claimed the Sylvan Library, the kentsu were able to march on Lisu and Caleria's castle. However, they were set back by the defense of an Akron Legionnaire giant, and only the summoning of Orca allowed the siege to come to an end with the defeat of both the legionnaire and the destruction of the castle's portcullis. However, Orca then immediately turned on Umezawa, attempting to obliterate him. Umezawa entered Orca's domain to kill her, and in the meantime, Jorgan Hage seized the opportunity of distraction and smashed Elsdragon's head with his hammer. Ramses Overdark then assumed control of the kentsu after being spared by Nicol Bolas.[3][6]

Trivia

  • When Greensleeves and Gull uncovered the ruins of the original College of Lat-Nam, they found a friese depicting a "Marhault" (no last name), emerging from his crashed ship and swearing vengeance.[7] Since these frieses would have been carved by the Sages of Lat-Nam in the period of the Brothers' War, thus depicting moments from the Time of Legends or earlier, this particular Marhault must have been someone else than Marhault Elsdragon, who lived thousands of years later - that is, unless Marhault Elsdragon was exceptionally long-lived.
