History
The Borderlands used to be located on the mainland Terisiare, southwest of Sumifa beyond the Halquina Mountains, along the western coast bordering the Lat-Nam Straits at the time of the Brothers' War.
Site of Sarraza, a large mountain, and the Sarrazan river that ran along it, the Borderlands also hosted a secret valley named the Chimes, populated by elves.[1]
After Mishra had laid claim to Almaaz, Urza sent a contingent of his army there to do battle. The prince of Almaaz, a songmage named Porros, used the opportunity to sow chaos, summoning a cockatrice named the Beast of the Hours to devastate both Urza's and Mishra's armies. The creature was only defeated once Samor the Collector used his magic to bind the creature beneath Mount Sarraza. Mishra bid Samor to create a spell to release the beast once more, to use it as a weapon against his brother. Samor prepared a spell but was murdered by Porros before he could complete it.[1]
At the Start of the Ice Age, the Great Glacier froze the Lat-Nam Straits and the Halquina Mountains but left parts of the Borderlands clear of ice. Come the Thaw, the Flooding of Terisiare covered much of the land, and left the Borderlands as an isolated island. Not eager to leave the Ice Age behind, queen Drufalden created an ice kingdom for herself in the Borderlands, locking large amounts of water in a local glacier, which connected the Borderlands with the greater island of Almaaz, and leaving only the narrow, land-locked Silver Sea behind. This also dried up the Sarrazan River, which had become home to a River Kingdom of Selkies, a race of semi-aquatic shape-changing people.[1]
In 3050 AR, the songmage Ogwater Rifkin released the hold of the ice on Drufalden's realm through song magic, causing a massive melting of the glacier. The Sarrazan River rose fully once more, providing steady water flow to the River Kingdom of Selkies, while the Silver Sea was flooded far beyond its former levels. Ogwater then went on to free the Beast of the Hours from its prison, destroying the Chimes in the process. The Beast was finally banished, ending its threat over the Borderlands after more than 3000 years.
Eventually, the meltwater of the cold kingdom would connect the Silver Sea to the ocean, once more making the Borderlands into an island separate from the larger island of Almaaz.[1]
