Anthems in Magic: The Gathering are cards that increase the power and toughness of creatures on your side of the battlefield. The most common anthem effects are temporary boosts. Anthems are pump effects that generally apply to multiple cards over the course of a turn. The term "Anthem" is derived from Glorious Anthem (Urza's Saga).

Unlike Lords, Anthems are never creatures. Anthem effects can be found on permanents like enchantments, artifacts and landss, but also be provided by instants and sorceries.

Creature type anthems

Unless specified, anthems grant +1/+1.

Any creature type

These anthems typically allow the player to choose a creature type to buff.

  • Cover of Darkness — Anthem enchantment that grants fear.
  • Door of Destinies — Anthem artifact that grants +1/+1 for each charge counter on it.
  • Etchings of the Chosen — +1/+1 to type chosen, and can pay {1} and sacrifice a creature of the chosen type to give another creature Indestructible.
  • Herald's Horn — Anthem artifact that reduces cost to cast chosen creature by {1}, and looks at top card at beginning of your upkeep and puts top card in hand if its chosen type.
  • Icon of Ancestry — +1/+1 to type chosen, and searches/draws from top three cards of library for one card of the chosen type.
  • Instruments of War — +1/+1 to type chosen
  • Obelisk of Urd — Anthem artifact that grants +2/+2.
  • Radiant Destiny— Anthem enchantment with ascend that grants +1/+1 to any chosen creature type, with an additional granting of vigilance if you have the city's blessing.
  • Rally the Ranks — Anthem enchantment.
  • Shared Triumph — Anthem enchantment.
  • Steely Resolve — Anthem enchantment that grants shroud.
  • Umori, the Collector — reduces the cost to cast chosen card type by {1}.
  • Urza's Incubator — Anthem artifact that reduces cost to cast any creature of the chosen creature type by {2}.
  • Vanquisher's Banner — Grants +1/+1 for a chosen creature type and lets you draw a card whenever you cast a spell of the chosen type.

  • Eye of Ugin — Anthem land. Colorless Eldrazi spells cost {2} less to cast.

Goblin

  • Dralnu's Crusade — Anthem enchantment. Also changes Goblins to black and grants Zombie creature type.
  • Goblin Assault — Anthem enchantment that grants attacks each turn if able.
  • Goblin Caves — Anthem enchantment - aura that grants +0/+2 as long as the enchanted land is a Basic Mountain.
  • Goblin Influx Array — Reduces costs by {R} (or {1} if non-red)
  • Goblin Shrine — Anthem enchantment - aura that grants +1/+0 as long as the enchanted land is a Basic Mountain.

  • Merrow Commerce — Anthem enchantment that at the beginning of your end step, untap all Merfolk you control.

Color anthems

Color anthems boost all your creatures of a certain color instead of a creature type. According to Mark Rosewater, they are popular. Still, Wizards don't have the chance to make them often in all colors.[1] Unless specified, they grant +1/+1.

  • Bad Moon — Anthem enchantment.
  • Unholy Citadel — Anthem land. Legendaries gain “bands with other legendary creatures.”

  • Caged Sun — Color chosen as it enters the battlefield. Adds 1 additional mana of the chosen color whenever a land you control is tapped for mana of the chosen color.
  • Crown of Convergence — Shares a color. Grants conditional (as long as the top card of your library is a creature)
  • Gauntlet of Power — Color chosen as it enters the battlefield. Adds 1 additional mana of the chosen color whenever a basic land is tapped for mana of the chosen color.
  • Hall of Triumph — Color chosen as it enters the battlefield.
  • Heraldic Banner — +1/+0 to color chosen as it enters the battlefield, and can tap for a mana of the chosen color

  • Acolyte of Bahamut — Anthem enchantment. Grants "The first Dragon spell you cast each turn costs 2 less to cast."
  • Agent of the Iron Throne — Anthem enchantment. Grants "Whenever an artifact or creature you control is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, each opponent loses 1 life."
  • Agent of the Shadow Thieves — Anthem enchantment. Grants "Whenever this creature attacks a player, if no opponent has more life than that player, put a +1/-1 counter on this creature. It gains deathtouch and indestructible until end of turn."
  • Candlekeep Sage — Anthem enchantment. Grants "Whenever this creature enters or leaves the battlefield, draw a card."
  • Clan Crafter — Anthem enchantment. Grants "{2}, Sacrifice an artifact: Put a +1/+1 counter on this creature and draw a card."
  • Cloakwood Hermit — Anthem enchantment. Grants "At the beginning of your end step, if a creature card was put into your graveyard from anywhere this turn, create two tapped 1/1 green Squirrel tokens."
  • Criminal Past — Anthem enchantment. Grants Menace and +X/+0, where X is the number of creature cards in your graveyard.
  • Cultist of the Absolute — Anthem enchantment. Grants +3/+3, flying, deathtouch, "Ward-Pay 3 life," and "At the beginning of your upkeep, sacrifice a creature."
  • Dragon Cultist — Anthem enchantment. Grants "At the beginning of your end step, if a source you controlled dealt 5 or more damage this turn, create a 4/4 red Dragon creature token with flying."
  • Dungeon Delver — Anthem enchantment. Grants "Room abilities of dungeons you own trigger an additional time."
  • Far Traveler — Anthem enchantment. Grants "At the beginning of your end step, exile up to one target tapped creature you control, then return it to the battlefield under its owner's control."
  • Feywild Visitor — Anthem enchantment. Grants "Whenever one or more nontoken creatures you control deal combat damage to a player, you create a 1/1 blue Faerie Dragon creature token with flying."
  • Flaming Fist — Anthem enchantment. Grants "Whenever this creature attacks, it gains double strike until end of turn."
  • Folk Hero — Anthem enchantment. Grants "Whenever you cast a spell that shares a creature type with this creature, draw a card. This ability triggers only once each turn."
  • Guild Artisan — Anthem enchantment. Grants "Whenever this creature attacks a player, if no opponent has more life than that player, another target creature gets +X/+X until end of turn, where X is this creature's power."
  • Hardy Outlander — Anthem enchantment. Grants "{1}, Sacrifice another creature or an artifact: This creature deals 1 damage to any target."
  • Haunted One — Anthem enchantment. Grants "Whenever this creature becomes tapped, it and other creatures you control that share a creature type with it each get +2/+0 and gain undying until end of turn."
  • Inspiring Leader — Anthem enchantment. Grants "Creature tokens you control get +2/+2."
  • Master Chef — Anthem enchantment. Grants "This creature enters the battlefield with an additional +1/+1 counter on it." and "Other creatures you control enter the battlefield with an additional +1/+1 counter on them."
  • Noble Heritage — Anthem enchantment. Grants "When this creature enters the battlefield and at the beginning of your upkeep, each player may put two +1/+1 counters on a creature they control. For each opponent who does, you gain protection from that player until your next turn."
  • Passionate Archaeologist — Anthem enchantment. Grants "Whenever you cast a spell from exile, this creature deals damage equal to that spell's mana value to any target."
  • Popular Entertainer — Anthem enchantment. Grants "Whenever one or more creatures you control deal combat damage to a player, goad target creature that player controls."
  • Raised by Giants — Anthem enchantment. Become 10/10 and Giants in addition to their other types.
  • Scion of Halaster — Anthem enchantment. Grants "The first time you would draw a card each turn, instead look at the top two cards of your library. Put one of them into your graveyard and the other back on top of your library. Then draw a card."
  • Shameless Charlatan — Anthem enchantment. Grants "{2}{U}: This creature becomes a copy of another target creature"
  • Street Urchin — Anthem enchantment. Grants "{1}, Sacrifice another creature or an artifact: This creature deals 1 damage to any target."
  • Sword Coast Sailor — Anthem enchantment. Grants "Whenever this creature attacks a player, if no opponent has more life than that player, this creature can't be blocked this turn."
  • Tavern Brawler — Anthem enchantment. Grants "At the beginning of your upkeep, exile the top card of your library. This creature gets +X/+0 until end of turn, where X is that card's mana value. You may play that card this turn."
  • Veteran Soldier — Anthem enchantment. Grants "Whenever this creature attacks a player, if no opponent has more life than that player, for each opponent, create a 1/1 white Soldier creature token tapped and attacking that player."
