The Temporal Anchor is a device crafted by Saheeli Rai to heighten a planeswalker's magic strength and precision, specifically Teferis time manipulation abilities.[1]
Description
The design of the Temporal Anchor was based upon Urza's designs for the time machine that had sent Karn back in time.[2] To avoid physical damage, Kaya used her powers to merge with Teferi and make him incorporeal during his travels.[3] By extracting his spirit and casting that back, it was thought that Teferi would be unable to interact with the past while remaining able to observe.[3]
The machine consists of a platform with leather straps and wires within a sculpture of swooping curves made of fiery orange metal.[4] The anchor is powered by the Powerstone that was removed from the Weatherlight after its compleation. This power source had originally been infused by Urza with the white mana from Serra's Realm. Another component of the Anchor is the Moonsilver Key.[2] The "pilot" is confined in a metal "coffin", that preserves a person's bodily operations while in stasis.[3]
History
Saheeli, Kaya and Teferi installed the Temporal Anchor at Urza's Tower to send Teferi back in time to determine the operation of the Sylex.[1] Prototype tests were hindered by the ghost of Sharaman, general of Urza's armies, who was hostile to any furthering of Urza's agenda - including any war against Phyrexians.[2] Although Teferi was meant to be a mere observer in the timestream, they found out that he manifested corporally and influenced certain people.[5] The goal was the detonation of the Sylex and the end of the war in 64 AR, but locating it was difficult, landing at the midst of The Dark Age, 21 years too late;[5] the Fall of Kroog, 36 years too early;[6] and an unnamed battle in the midst of the War, 20 years too early.[7]
Arriving at the right moment at last, Teferri witnessed Urza setting of the Sylex Blast.[3] Engaging in conversation with Urza right before the artificer's ascension, Teferi learned that there was no unknown spell to discover, no secret mechanism by which Urza had activated his Sylex. The trigger to detonate the Sylex was not a spell or an artifact — it was a person.[3]
However, damage due to the Phyrexian assault on the Tower left Teferi's consciousness lost in the time stream and rapidly losing memory of his current situation. While hypothetically Kaya would have heard everything Teferi did and she claims to know how to use the Sylex, what is known is unclear. Saheeli remained behind to fix the machine and revive Teferi.
