The Temporal Anchor is a device crafted by Saheeli Rai to heighten a planeswalker's magic strength and precision, specifically Teferi's time manipulation abilities.[1]

Description

The design of the Temporal Anchor was based upon Urza's designs for the time machine that had sent Karn back in time, given to Saheeli by Jodah.[2] To avoid physical damage, Kaya used her powers to extend her ghostform over Teferi and make him incorporeal during his travels.[3] By extracting his spirit and casting that back, it was thought that Teferi would be unable to interact with the past while remaining able to observe.[3]

The machine consists of a platform with leather straps and wires within a sculpture of swooping curves made of fiery orange metal.[4] The anchor is powered by the Powerstone that was removed from the Weatherlight after its compleation.[5] This power source had originally been infused by Urza with the white mana from Serra's Realm. Another component of the Anchor is the Moonsilver Key, which helps channel the machine's energy.[2] The "pilot" is confined in Tawnos's Coffin, an artifact that preserves a person's bodily operations while in stasis.[3]

History

Saheeli, Kaya and Teferi installed the Temporal Anchor at Urza's Tower to send Teferi back in time to determine the operation of the Sylex.[1] Prototype tests were hindered by the ghost of Sharaman, general of Urza's armies, who was hostile to any furthering of Urza's agenda - including any war against Phyrexians.[2] Before he was put to rest by Kaya, Sharaman severely damaged the power stabilization subsystem, though Saheeli was able to repair it. Although Teferi was meant to be a mere observer in the timestream, they found that he appeared corporeal and was able to interact with people in the past, though he was not affected by them.[6][3] The planeswalkers tested the machine by hiding secret messages and sending Teferi back to observe and report them, confirming that he had been in the past. They tested the machine for a month before sending Teferi in search of their target.

The goal was the detonation of the Sylex and the end of the war in 64 AR, but locating it was difficult. Teferi arrived amid The Dark Age, 21 years too late;[6] at the Siege of Kroog, 36 years too early;[7] and an unnamed battle amid the War, 20 years too early.[8]

Arriving at the right moment, at last, Teferi witnessed Urza setting the Sylex Blast.[3] Engaging in conversation with Urza right before the artificer's ascension, Teferi learned that there was no unknown spell to discover, no secret mechanism by which Urza had activated his Sylex. The trigger to detonate the Sylex was not a spell or an artifact — it was a person.[3]

However, just after his discovery, the powerstone imploded and overloaded the anchor, which left Teferi's consciousness lost in the time stream. Saheeli and Wrenn remained behind with Jodah to fix the machine and revive Teferi, while Kaya left with the Invasion force and what knowledge she was able to gain from watching Teferi's experience.[9]
