The Great Marsh is a large area on the subcontinent of Tamingazin, part of the continent of Otaria on Dominaria
Description
The Great Marsh is located west and south of the Valley of Tamingazin on the opposite bank of the River Nish, and north of Suderbod. It is a wide stretch of bogs, rivulets and grassy banks, with a salt lagoon coming in from the sea. The giant En'Jaga live there, and it is also host to biting flies and fierce attalo, giant tortoises that can eat unwary swimmers.[1]
History
While the marsh has always been a natural barrier to travel between the two regions, it became infamous for the events that transpired during the Betrayal of Tamingazin, when it played a pivotal role in the fate of the Valley and its defense against the Suder invasion. The marsh became the setting for a daring and perilous mission undertaken by Recin, an exiled Garan elf, and Kitrin, a young mage. Their goal was to retrieve the Magewall Hub, the artifact that maintained the Valley’s magical defenses, which had been stolen by the treacherous mage Aligarius Timni under the manipulation of the Suderbod ambassador, Ursal Daleel.
After navigating the treacherous swamp, Recin and Kitrin were captured by En'Jaga warriors — vicious, monstrous soldiers loyal to Suderbod — and imprisoned in the camp of Suderbod’s leader, Hemarch Solin. The marsh had now become a prison for the two. Solin, known for his morbid obesity and casual cruelty, sought to assault Recin and Kitrin. In a desperate act of survival, Kitrin used her tracking crystal as a throwing dagger, killing Solin in the process. In the aftermath of Solin’s death, Aligarius Timni, now disillusioned and wracked with guilt for his role in the betrayal, aided Recin and Kitrin in escaping the Suderbod camp. Together, they incapacitated Ursal Daleel, the mastermind behind much of the turmoil, and fled the camp with the Magewall Hub in hand.
As they ventured deeper into the bayou of the Great Marsh, they were pursued by a recovered Ursal and his guard. The pursuit culminated in a final confrontation in the murky waters, where Aligarius Timni used his magic to reactivate the Magewall, cutting off the Suder forces from the Valley. Meanwhile, Recin fought off Ursal’s guard in a brutal battle. After killing the guard, Recin held Ursal Daleel under the water of the bayou, and a hungry attalo, a monstrous swamp tortoise, devoured the ambassador whole.
In the chaos, Kitrin rescued Recin from drowning, saving him from the bayou’s treacherous depths. The two were left to flee the marsh, but the unexpected events had shifted the tide of the conflict in the Valley’s favor. Meanwhile, back at the Valley’s borders, the main Suderbod army clashed with Tallibeth Tarngold and her defenders in a desperate struggle. The Suder invasion seemed unstoppable as the Valleyfolk fought valiantly against the overwhelming numbers of their enemy. However, the sudden reappearance of the Magewall amid battle marked a turning point. The wall’s magical barrier, reactivated by Aligarius at the last possible moment, halted the Suder forces and allowed the Valleyfolk to push the invaders back.
Thus, the Great Marsh had played a key role in this turn of events. It was there that Recin, Kitrin, and Aligarius had managed to secure the Magewall Hub, kill their pursuers, and give the Valley the chance to survive the Suder invasion. The swamp, dark and dangerous, had become the unlikely setting for the events that ensured the Valley of Tamingazin's victory.[1]
