The 2017 National Championships were the first National Championships events that took place since the reintroduction of Nationals in 2017.[1] They were taking place across three weekends in 2017 in 73 countries, and featured Standard and Booster Draft.

Announcement

The return of Nationals was announced on February 8, 2017. These were initially determined to be Standard only, and the top Pro Point earner in the previous season for each country, being already qualified for the World Magic Cup, could not participate. However, following a reevaluation after feedback from the Magic community, changes to Nationals announced on April 18, 2017 included that the events would be split-format events with both Standard and Booster Draft, and that the top Pro Point earner would be eligible to participate.

Qualification

Silver, Gold, and Platinum members of the Pro Players Club were invited, as well as members of the Hall of Fame. Most players, however, earned their invites by earning a sufficient number of yearly Planeswalker Points during the previous season. The number of points required varied for each country.
