Phlage is one of the Titans of Theros, imprisoned in the Underworld by Klothys.

History

Before the gods of Theros rose to power, the titans — horrific primal urges made flesh — roamed the mortal realm, sowing death and destruction in their wake. The mortals, powerless to defend themselves, prayed in their hour of need. From this concentrated devotion sprang forth the gods themselves. Imbued with incredible power, the gods sealed the Titans away in the Underworld. Klothys, the god of fate, volunteered as their jailer and sequestered herself in the Underworld for eternity, acting as an eternal seal and ensuring the Titans remained trapped.[1]

Phlage is the titan of Burning Wind and Fire's Fury, an all-consuming whirlwind of fire.[2]

Inspiration

Phlage’s title as the Titan of Burning Wind is likely an allusion to Typhon a being associated with the titans, and cited as the source of volcanic fires and associated with whirlwinds. Phlage is likely inspired by Hyperion, the titan of light and sight, sometimes equated with the sun god Helios. Phlage may also allude to Prometheus, the titan that granted humanity fire. The titan's name may be based on the name of the flaming river Phlegethon, present in the underworld.
