The River, sometimes called the Great River, is a flood sacred to the Cho-Arrim, who believe that it represents the cycle of life, death, and rebirth.[1][2]

Description

The exact flow or length of the River is not described, and there is no specific indication that it flows to the Outer Sea, but what is certain is that it winds through Rushwood, passing through the lands and villages of the Cho-Arrim, who hold the River in great esteem. The River is a representation for them of the endless cycle of life, death, and rebirth, and they send their dead down the river to be born anew.[2]

History

While searching for herbs along the River, Cho-Akhan stumbled upon the ancient tomb of the shaman Sia-am-Erh, whose body lay undisturbed beneath a swarm of golden, glowing moths. Upon the deceased shaman's face rested the Ancestral Mask, a relic of immense power. Later, when plague swept across the plains from Mercadia City, claiming the life of Cho-Akhan's brother, Cho-Ran, she took up Sia-am-Erh's mask, vowing to protect her village and strike back against the plaguebearers. But as she donned it, the mask consumed her, dragging her into the depths of the River, where she was bound to the restless spirits of the fallen Cho-Arrim. One by one, the dead took fragments of the mask, carving jagged scars into 'Akhan’s flesh and granting her their strength.

Emerging from the River forever changed, 'Akhan joined her mothers, Cho-Shadi and Cho-Fihad, preparing to march against Mercadia City in a war fueled by vengeance, loss, and the will of the ancestors.[2]
