Abda and Rigi were a bonded pair of monster-bonders from the plane of Ikoria, known for their independence, survivalist mindset, and deep connection with one another. They deliberately chose to live outside the influence of fortified human settlements and operated autonomously in Ikoria's dangerous wilderness. Abda, a pragmatic and skeptical human, was paired with Rigi, a large, badger-like monster known for his strength and loyalty. Together, they developed a reputation for their tactical precision and ability to survive hostile encounters. Their partnership came to an end during a confrontation near the Ozolith, where both perished while aiding others in their effort to quell growing monster unrest.

Description

Abda was a seasoned woman recognized for her no-nonsense demeanor and critical attitude toward unfamiliar people or ideas. She wore durable clothing designed for life in the wilderness, including a brown jacket and white shirt. Her hair was styled in sharp spikes, echoing the thorny back of her monster companion. She was practical in both appearance and behavior, relying on observation and experience to assess threats. Abda frequently voiced criticism of impractical strategies and was not hesitant to challenge authority figures, though she remained committed to the safety of her companions. She showed a protective attitude toward Brin, one of the younger bonders.

Rigi was a large, badger-like creature with brown fur, a lighter underbelly, two prominent lower tusks, and rows of black spines along his brow, back, and shoulders. He communicated through posture and deep vocalizations. Rigi's presence was physically imposing, and his loud bark was capable of startling even experienced hunters. As a bonded monster, he acted in close coordination with Abda, often reacting instinctively to her commands and movements. Their long partnership enabled them to operate effectively together in both hostile environments and during combat. The two were deeply cautious of outsiders and preferred action over extended discussion.

History

Gathering of bonders

Abda and Rigi encountered Brin, Lukka, and Vivien Reid at a rocky convergence of rivers north of Drannith, a known rendezvous point for monster-bonders operating outside city control. Brin, accompanied by the small creature Roland, had sought out Abda as a reliable contact. Lukka, having recently bonded with Leori and been branded a deserter by his city, shared his plan to approach the Ozolith, a magical structure whose influence had begun to alter monster behavior. Abda, suspicious of Lukka's military background and unproven intentions, greeted him with hostility and warned of the dangers posed by urban factions.

Despite her skepticism, Abda remained for the meeting. The group's numbers grew with the arrival of Barrow and Zeph, who arrived at the site in a flash of lightning. The assembled bonders made camp and discussed the growing monster unrest. Vivien identified herself as a Planeswalker and claimed that another Planeswalker had disturbed the Ozolith, accelerating the instability. Abda dismissed the explanation but listened to Brin and Barrow's endorsements of Lukka's plan. She agreed to participate in the journey not because of shared belief in the mission, but because of her loyalty to Brin and concern for the balance of the wilds. Rigi appeared to align with the other bonded monsters, further influencing her decision.

Battle at the Ozolith

Main article: Battle at the Ozolith

The group traveled together to the Ozolith, with Abda and Rigi riding alongside Vivien and Barrow atop Leori. As they neared the target, Abda evaluated Lukka's strategy but offered no objections once a plan was in place. Once the Battle at the Ozolith had started and they were confronted with the guardian nightmares, Abda and Rigi took on one of the larger threats. Rigi attacked the black serpent-like monster directly, while Abda defended her companion with a twin-pronged spear, intercepting its venomous tail strikes. Their combat coordination was the result of extensive experience. They worked as a unit to repel the serpent's attempts to crush or poison them.

In the final stage of the conflict near the Ozolith, Abda and Rigi fought amid ongoing attacks from bonded monsters, city-trained hunters, and magical constructs. While assisting Brin, Abda was fatally struck by a projectile fired from the skyship Vermilion, which had joined the battle from above. Rigi reacted with distress but resumed fighting. When the Ozolith emitted a pulse of energy, Rigi was affected by the surge and reentered combat in a heightened state. He joined the nightmare creatures in turning against the hunter forces. Rigi destroyed the hunter's longboat and helped bring down the Vermilion by damaging its gasbag, though losing his life in the process.
