Raugrin is one of the five triomes found on the plane of Ikoria. It is thematically and geographically distinct from the other triomes, with its primary mana alignment being red, supported by secondary influences from white and blue. The region is dominated by volatile geological features such as volcanoes, lava flows, and crystal formations, which shape the behavior of both its inhabitants and its monsters. Raugrin is the territory of the dinosaur clade, and it is the domain of Vadrok, the apex monster who rules over the area with explosive ferocity.

Description

Raugrin's plains are heavily cracked from prevalent geological activity.

Raugrin is defined by its rugged and geologically active terrain, which includes a continuous line of volcanic mountains, sheer cliffs that drip with molten lava, and wide expanses of gleaming white-sand beaches. These geographic elements form a jagged coastal rim that stretches along the edge of the continent. In contrast to its dramatic geological activity, the region's plant life is sparse and relatively unremarkable in appearance, often characterized by muted colors and stunted growth. This visual austerity, however, serves to highlight the triome's natural crystal spires, which gleam with reflected sunlight and dominate the landscape with their unnatural brilliance.[1][2]

Raugrin's coastline is lined with white-sand beaches.

The coastline of Raugrin is constantly expanding due to the ongoing interaction between volcanic activity and the sea. Magma pouring from vents and fissures in the Ongra Mountains flows down to the water's edge, cooling upon contact and forming new outcroppings of igneous rock. Over time, this process creates jetties and other land extensions that push the boundary of Raugrin ever further into the ocean. These additions, though newly formed, become immediately contested by the region's monsters and travelers alike.[1]

Locations

Raugrin contains several notable locations that serve as waypoints, sanctuaries, or monster territories across the triome:

  • Jal Korcha, the Terror Road – This ancient roadway is a transcontinental route that stretches for thousands of miles, starting in the southwestern reaches of Raugrin near Lavabrink. It continues through the Ongra Mountains and enters Ketria near Lake Attayal before eventually terminating in Savai at the site of the ruined city of Drannith. The segment that lies within Raugrin is paved with sharp, black volcanic glass and monitored by strategically placed alarm crystals. These devices emit audible signals when large monsters approach, allowing travelers and settlements to prepare or flee.[1][3] One of its branches leads directly toward Vadrok’s nesting grounds.
The Ongra Mountains dominate much of Raugrin's landscape.
  • The Ongra Mountains Red mana – A massive volcanic mountain range that forms a natural barrier between Raugrin and the neighboring regions of Ikoria. This mountain chain is home to numerous lava flows, volcanic vents, and geothermal features.[1]
    • Charrog Red mana – The tallest peak in the Ongra Mountains, Charrog is not only the highest point in the range but also the tallest mountain on the entire plane of Ikoria. It is an active volcano, and its superheated slopes serve as ideal nesting grounds for Raugrin's dinosaurs, who rely on the thermal activity to incubate their eggs.[1]
    • Kauld Red mana – A large, exposed basin of lava situated within the Ongra range. The lake is filled with constantly churning molten rock, forming a dangerous yet vital part of the region’s ecosystem.[1]
      • Lavabrink – This sanctuary city is precariously situated between the lava lake Kauld and a volatile volcanic shelf. Lavabrink is one of the few permanent human settlements in Raugrin and is protected by both natural barriers and constructed defenses.[1]
    • The Shroka Peaks Red mana – A series of narrow, pillar-like mountains that stand out for their vertical structure and height. These natural columns are geologically fragile but visually striking. They surround a broad depression filled with smooth, black volcanic glass.[4]
      • Vadrok’s Nest Blue manaRed manaWhite mana – This basin serves as the nesting grounds for Vadrok, the apex predator of Raugrin. It is a place feared by both monsters and mortals, and it can be accessed from a branching route of the Jal Korcha.[3]

Dominant clade

Akim is an example of Raugrin's many ferocious dinosaurs.

The dominant monster clade native to Raugrin is composed entirely of dinosaurs, massive reptilian beasts known for their physical resilience and destructive tendencies. These creatures embody the elemental fury and relentless violence of molten stone. Raugrin's dinosaurs are not subtle in their hunting practices; they attack indiscriminately, consuming any creature they perceive as prey and obliterating anything that gets in their way. While they are capable of eating carrion or scavenged meat, most Raugrin dinosaurs instinctively prefer fresh prey—organisms that struggle and fight back.

Compared to dinosaurs on other planes, such as Ixalan, those found in Raugrin are generally more robust and aggressive. They tend to possess hardened, scaly skin and are often armored with natural spikes, horns, or mineralized plating that enhances their durability. Bipedal forms are common, and many dinosaurs also feature thick, muscular tails, which they use to strike or destabilize enemies. Raugrin also supports many species of winged dinosaurs and aquatic variants, each adapted to its ecological niche. Despite their biological differences, most Raugrin dinosaurs share an instinctual aggression that makes them universally dangerous.[1]

The apex monster of Raugrin is Vadrok, a thunderously powerful and territorial creature who dominates the region. Vadrok's blue flames and formidable presence deter other large predators and shape the migratory patterns of both monsters and humans across the triome, leading to the entire Raugrin triome being derisively referred to as "Vadrok Turf".[1]
