MTG Wiki:WikiProject DeRevision

This project amended references to the Revision to a more neutral tone, in keeping with current editorial standards.

Context

Starting with Mirage, Wizards of the Coast began writing Magic's story in-house, rather than relying on external authors. The new stories occasionally presented contradictory accounts of characters and events, and especially the nature of the ability to planeswalk. Some fans used the term "revisionist" to describe the changes.

Sources from that era are now scarce on the internet, and largely exist as archive.org mirrors. MTG Wiki itself was founded in 2005, and some early articles still use the term. What records remain indicate that it was used in a derisive manner, which means that its usage on MTG Wiki violates our norms against loaded language. No extant source is known demonstrating a Wizards of the Coast statement regarding the change, or any term they may have used to describe it, and it is possible that no such statement ever existed. Finding such a statement more than 25 years later is unlikely, and as such is a low priority, but might significantly change the goals of the project.

(A relatively recent article named "Revisionist History" is completely unrelated.)

Proposed changes

A single article, either at "Revision" or "Revisionist", should remain as a record of the documented fan usage of the label.

Other articles using the term should be edited for neutrality and remove the label. Removing coverage of the change in continuity would also be non-neutral, so we must cover both continuities, and place the older one in appropriate context. Affected articles should take on a consistent structure and style regarding the change.
