Gerardo Godínez Estrada, better known as Chiclick, was a Mexican professional Magic: the Gathering and Poker player. He had significant successes in both games, being Mexican National Champion[1][2] in Magic, and winning just short of US$300,000 on the Poker circuit.[3]

In 2015, Godínez was travelling home from a Poker tournament in Guadalajara when the vehicle he was in was involved in an automotive accident. He had not been wearing a seatbelt and passed away as a result of his injuries. He was 34 years old.[4][5]

Career

Chiclick became National Champion fairly early on in his Magic career. He had been introduced to the game in 1997 by a friend he traded sports cards with, and won his title in 1999 during the powerful Tempest and Urza's Saga block Standard environment.[1] He'd been runner up the previous year, and regularly featured in National Top 8s until the National Championships were originally disestablished in 2012.

He played in 35 Pro Tour events between 1997 Pro Tour Los Angeles and the 2010 World Championships, the most of any Mexican player.[citation needed] For context, countrymen Fernando Domínguez Roldán and Marcelino Freeman are joint second with 20 Pro Tours each. His best finishes at the Pro Tour level were 19th place at the Standard format 2000 Pro Tour Chicago and 17th place at the Extended format 2005 Pro Tour Los Angeles.

Chiclick also has two Grand Prix Top 8s and finished in third place at the 2000 Latin American Championship. He was defeated in the semifinals of that event by Gustavo Chapela, who he'd beaten the previous year to win his National Championship title.

2000 Magic Invitational

As the player with the best DCI ranking in the Latin American region,[6] Chiclick was one of 16 players who earned a spot in the 2000 Sydney Invitational. He would ultimately finish in 11th place.

Out of the Invitational's five formats, Chiclick had the most success with the Auction of Champions. He secured Australian Tom Chanpheng's White Weenie deck from the 1996 World Championships with a bid of a six card starting hand and 15 life.[7][8][9] This he played to a 3-0 record, defeating:

Conversely, his worst format was Build Your Own Block where he went 0-3 across the three rounds. He built an aggressive Sligh deck from a pool of Tempest, Visions and Alliances.[9][10][11] He was defeated by:
