Casey McCarrel is an American former professional player. His accomplishments include a Pro Tours win at PT New York 1999[1] and a Team Limited Grand Prix win at Pittsburgh 2000 together with "Huey" Jensen and Ben Rubin. He also participated in the 2000-01 Magic Invitational.[2]
In one of the most hotly debated and defended cases of cheating by a Pro player, McCarrell was accused and convicted of stacking opponent’s decks while shuffling at US Nationals 2001. When McCarrel shuffled Brian Hegstad's deck, he had manipulated the order of the cards. Upon closer inspection, the judges noted that the first eleven cards in Hegstad's deck were spells, which would have forced him into a poor situation, either drawing all spells and no lands, or running into large stretch of land. Head Judge Collin Jackson reviewed all the facts and, after a judges' conference, concluded McCarrel had indeed been stacking and branded him a three-year suspension from the game.[3][4][5][6][7]
For McCarrel, this marked his second disqualification at a Premier Event, the first coming at Pro Tour London 1999, where he had misrepresented critical information to a judge. That infraction had earned him a sixth month suspension.[3]
