Ash is a Human Peasant woman from Embereth, Eldraine.[1]

History

A refugee from Embereth after the New Phyrexian Invasion, Ash was adopted by Delverhaugh blacksmiths. She desired to attend the fortress's Grand Ball, but most humans aren't invited.[1][2] With the help of mice, she acquired armor and disguised herself as a knight, sneaking into the Grand Ball at Delverhaugh. When she arrived at the party, she was greeted by the handsome Goddric, who asked her to dance, and she quickly fell in love. When redcaps raided the party, she stepped in to defend Goddric, but as the situation grew dire, he revealed his true form as a dragon.[3] At the stroke of midnight, she had to flee the party, dropping her helmet in the escape.[4] Goddric may have used the discarded helm to help identify her later. Her story is recounted in the Tale of the Masked Maiden.

Inspiration

Ash is based on Cinderella of the eponymous folktale. Her name references the "cinder" of the original character's name. The Crystal Slipper is reimagined as her discarded helm. Ash is given an adoptive family rather than a hostile step-family, and no faerie godmother — the Armory Mice help her of their own accord.
