Peasant is a casual constructed variant of Magic: the Gathering which bans all rare cards, and has players construct a deck with up to 5 uncommon cards, with the rest being commons. By contrast, Pauper only allows commons.
Tournaments for this format have taken place at Gen Con since 2001.[1] However, the original banned list is considered to be outdated and most tournaments are played by the rules of the largest active Peasant community.
Background
Robert Baranowski created the Peasant format in 2001 to "provide a competitive format that is accessible in terms of budget to as many people as possible."[2] He said he based the it on the concept of the "peasant mage" who everyone in the village knows, and someone who has enough magic to help their neighbors. Decks are mainly constructed out of common cards, but players can have up to five uncommons. Similar to Pauper, if a card was ever printed at common, any printing counts as a common card.[1]
A tournament called Master of Peasant Magic occurred at GenCon 2001.[1]
