The Magewall is the magical shield that surrounds the Valley of Tamingazin on the continent of Otaria, on the plane of Dominaria.[1]
Description
The magewall was devised by the Institute of Arcane Study to protect the valley from intruders. It is a ring surrounding the Valley of Tamingazin, visible and glowing with yellow light. Whoever tries to cross the barrier can do so, but is slowed down by a factor of at least 25 on the border. This effect also increases with each person going through, effectively shutting out foreign armies. The magewall is a self-sustaining enchantment which can be controlled using an artifact called the Magewall Hub. The Hub cannot force the wall to vanish or collapse, but it can be used to move the wall.[1]
History
The Magewall was a powerful magical barrier erected long ago to protect the Valley of Tamingazin from external threats. It was crafted over a long period by ancient mages at the Institute of Arcane Study, which had been founded after the Fall of the College of Lat-Nam. While the Magewall protected the valley from external forces, it did little to prevent internal conflict. The valley’s three dominant peoples — humans, Garan elves, and Viashino — were often at odds, and battles for control of the fertile lands continued for generations. Despite this, the presence of the Magewall allowed the valley’s inhabitants to wage their wars with relative freedom from the threat of invasion.
The Magewall’s strength was anchored in the Magewall Hub, an artifact that maintained the barrier’s magic. For centuries, the Hub remained a well-guarded secret, known only to a few. However, the Magewall’s fate took a dramatic turn during the Betrayal of Tamingazin, when the rogue mage Aligarius Timni was manipulated by agents of Suderbod. Under their influence, Timni stole the Magewall Hub, moving the barrier into the sky, and leaving the valley vulnerable to invasion. The Suder forces, aided by monstrous En'Jaga, launched an assault on the valley, causing devastation and near-collapse.
As the valley teetered on the brink of destruction, the Magewall Hub was uncovered. Recin, an exiled Garan elf, and the young mage Kitrin embarked on a perilous mission to recover the Hub. After being aided by a remorseful Aligarius Timni, who sought redemption for his actions, the Magewall Hub was reclaimed from the clutches of Ursal Daleel. Timni reactivated the Magewall just as the Suder invasion reached its peak, cutting off the invading forces and saving the valley from certain defeat. With the restoration of the Magewall, the Valley of Tamingazin was secured once more. The Magewall stands as both a symbol of the valley’s isolation and a reminder of the dangers of unchecked power. Though its creation has ensured the valley's protection, it had also played a key role in the conflict that nearly destroyed it. In the end, the Magewall remains, a testament to the balance of magic, power, and the forces that sought to control them.[1]
