The Fountain of Cho is a site of particular reverence for the Cho-Arrim on Mercadia.

Description

The Fountain of Cho is constantly overflowing with glowing water, which runs off the small wooded island it stands on and into a lagoon formed of the River. The fountain is ringed by eight- or nine-foot tall saplings, far smaller than the other trees of the Rushwood. The saplings shine with a sliver gleam, bursting with young vitality, and the ground around the fountain is thick with moss. The fountain is a short stone pillar with a broad top and a narrow bottom. The pillar was carved with runes, many of them worn with age. From a wide, shallow bowl at the top bubbles a spring of clear water. It courses over the edges of the disk and down to the earth in a sparkling mist. From there, it runs through the circle of trees to the lagoon.[1]

The Cho-Arrim call it the Navel of the World, the place from which they began, the place to which they return. It is the point around which all things revolve. It is there that their souls pass away from their world into the Great River in the sky. The fountain also has a place of reverence for those needing healing, as its pure-glowing waters are believed to carry curative effects.[1]

History

In 4205 AR, Cho-Manno brought Orim to the Fountain of Cho and shared with her its religious significance for the Cho-Arrim. Orim was fascinated by the runic script covering the fountain, which felt tantalizingly familiar to her. They shared their first kiss next to its gushing waters.[1]
