Calamity Beasts are huge, non-sapient elemental creatures from Bloomburrow, that bring seasonal changes and weather variations.[1][2] The Calamity Beasts wreak disaster on an unprecedented scale while they move through the landscape. They are essentially living seasons, and every bit as much part of nature as the animalfolk.[3]
Description
Bloomburrow has no natural seasons.[2] Instead, seasons are brought on by the appearance of Calamity Beasts, whose migrations bring shifts in temperature and environment that get called seasons. The animalfolk have names for every season, some occurring once in a generation. In contrast, others happen yearly with regularity, and each season is named after the powers of the Calamity Beast that caused it. After the Battle of Kell's Ridge and the time of the Order of the Holly Leaf, Valley was largely left untouched by them other than those that brought the changing of the seasons until the events of the Bloomburrow storyline.[4]
The most powerful Calamities are given names and are unique, while minor Calamities are seen more frequently, and their powers are lesser in scale and effect.
Major Calamities
The major Calamity Beasts include:
- Beza (), also known as the the Spring Elk, harbinger of Spring.[4]
- Eluge (), the Flood Gar.[5][3] Heralds the Season of Deep Waters.
- Lumra (), which represents the feeling of getting lost in the woods.[3]
- Maha (), the Night Owl. The Season of Long Night.
- Wildsear (), the Wildfire Wolf[4][2]
- Ygra (), which turns natural life around it into pillars of salt.[3]
Minor Calamities
There are also non-legendary minor Calamity Beasts that the inhabitants of Bloomburrow have named. The most notable are:
- The Blight Snake () represented by Rottenmouth Viper, causes nature to decay around it.[3]
- The Sun Hawk () represented by Pyreswipe Hawk, known as the harbinger of Summer.[2]
- The Drought Cat () represented by Sunspine Lynx.[4]
- The Blizzard Elk () represented by Galewind Moose, known as the harbinger of Winter.[2]
Trivia
- Although Dragonhawk, Fate's Tempest was part of the cycle of Calamity Beast cards in Bloomburrow,[6] the set's story is explicit that Dragonhawk itself is not considered a Calamity Beast on the plane, likely due to the fact it is neither an elemental nor native to Bloomburrow.[7]
- During design, Calamity Beasts were originally referred to as "Predators."[8]
