Hugs is a gruff old badgerfolk from Goodhill on Bloomburrow, and a member of Mabel’s party.[1]
Description
Hugs is larger than most of Bloomburrow's animalfolk, standing three times Mabel's height.[2] He has broad shoulders and a white-striped head. He has many scars and wears an eyepatch.
The strong-armed, big-hearted badgerfolk Hugs is no stranger to danger.[3] Once he met the lizardfolk Gev, The two became inseparable, not only as mercenaries, but as partners.
History
Growing up alone in the Root Maze, Hugs made few friends outside the insects he'd eventually have to snack on.[3] When the lizardfolk Gev stumbled upon him as part of an adventure, they became fast friends, though Hugs couldn't speak a word and didn't yet have a name. They adventured together for many years, racking up big scores and spending them on bigger feasts. It was on one of these early adventures that Hugs fended off a Calamity Beast, a moose, while Gev led a town to safety.[3] When the townsfolk returned, Hugs stood alone, wounded but tall. The children of the town gathered around him, arm in arm, with hugs all around. When he knelt and returned the gesture, Gev knew exactly what to call him.
Hugs and Gev once traveled out beyond the Outer Woods with their skunkfolk companion Kiki, but he won't talk about the events that took place.[4] The three referred to themselves as "the Striped Rapscallions."
When Mabel ventured to investigate the destruction of Pondside around 4564 AR, Hugs volunteered to accompany her by standing and nodding his head. Gev, who was beside Hugs, begrudgingly agreed to volunteer as well so that he could keep an eye on him. Finneas, Zoraline and Helga also joined the party.[2] Hugs was second to volunteer. When the Flood Gar attacked Three Tre City, Hugs was instrumental in saving the lives of the other party members.[4]

Trivia
- Hugs is depicted as a European badger on his regular card, but as an American badger on the borderless alternate art. Although similar in appearance, the two species are not closely related.
