Birgi is the god of boasting from Kaldheim. Known as the Storyteller, she is fun-loving and charismatic, and always the center of attention as she travels across the Ten Realms.[1]

Description

Birgi calls herself the Envoy of the Gods and has declared it her mission to carry "the good fortune of the gods" to less fortunate realms.[2] But everyone knows that the hedonistic Birgi's sole purpose is to find the best feasts and celebrations across the realms and join in the fun.

Birgi is the middle child of Alrund and Cosima, and Toralf's younger sister. While Toralf delights in performing impossible feats, Birgi prefers to boast about what she's supposedly done. She's not above claiming Toralf's feats as her own—for the sake of a good story, of course.

Birgi's magic energizes the people around her, quickly transforming a quiet gathering to a rowdy party...and eventually to an out-of-control riot.[2]

History

She once hired a dwarf skald to follow Toralf around and bring back reports of his mighty deeds.[2] But Toralf, preferring to undertake his heroic exploits alone, got tired of the pesky skald and threw him off a cliff. Birgi's response was to hire a sneakier skald, whom Toralf has yet to detect. Birgi loves to tell stories of these exploits at feasts, and if anyone suspects that she is taking credit for her brother's accomplishments, they tend to enjoy her company too much to care.

When the planeswalker Niko Aris arrived on Kaldheim, Birgi goaded some Viking clans into conflict to show Niko the nature of their ways.[3]

Trivia

  • Birgi may have been inspired by Freyja, the ancient Nordic goddess associated with gold and wealth.
  • She may draw additional inspiration from the Fylgjur, supernatural beings or spirits that accompany a person in relation to their destiny or fortune in ancient Nordic mythology.
  • Birgi could also be compared to the goddess Sága and the god Bragi, both gods linked to poetry and sagas (consequently linked to fame).
