Commander 2017, officially styled as Commander (2017 Edition), is a product in the Commander series that will be released by Wizards of the Coast on August 25, 2017.[3]

Set details

Starting with Commander 2017, Commander sets are reduced from five to four preconstructed theme decks (without reducing the number of new cards) and will be built around themes instead of focussing on color combinations.[4] The reduction of number of decks comes forth from the idea that the best Commander play experience for a new Commander player is a four-player game.[4]

Commander 2017 features four 100-card decks. There are 56 new cards legal in Vintage and Legacy. Each of the four decks is tribal themed, based on the "most popular, and interesting, tribes".[3] Cards from Commander 2017 will be featured and distributed in connection with a future offering on Magic Online. The expansion symbol is a four-parted shield File:C17 expansion symbol.png.

Each preconstructed deck was designed with an identity for each tribe:[5]

Mechanics

  • Commander 2017 introduces eminence, an ability word that occurs on legendary creatures. It gives the creatures usefulness in both the command zone and in the battlefield.

Cycles

Commander 2017 has at least three cycles of new cards, some of which only consist of four cards —
