Roles are aura enchantment type predefined tokens introduced in Wilds of Eldraine.[1][2][3]
Description
Roles are colorless aura enchantment tokens, with "Enchant creature", that attach to creatures upon creation giving them different abilities. No more than one Role controlled by the same player can be attached to the same creature at the same time. If a new Role is attached to that creature by the same player, the old one is put into the graveyard and then ceases to exist.[3] A single creature can have several Roles if each Role was created by a different player.
Each of the printed tokens are templated in a flip card style, with one role on the top half of the token and another upside-down on the bottom half.[4] You can use these by turning the token so that the appropriate Role is right side up, then placing the token behind the appropriate creature so the unused, upside-down Role is covered. The use of these specific tokens is optional.
List of Roles
The Roles are structurally important to the set, and as such the mechanic is distributed across all the colors. Each color gets a particular set of roles that they create that are linked together by, in general, +1/+1 and a varied upside. Cursed Role is a downside Aura that is put on opposing creatures in , while Young Hero produces a +1/+1 counter, with these two being the ones that do not add the typical +1/+1.
- Cursed — associated with — Enchanted creature has base power and toughness 1/1.
- Monster — associated with — Enchanted creature gets +1/+1 and has trample.
- Royal — associated with — Enchanted creature gets +1/+1 and has ward .
- Sorcerer — associated with — Enchanted creature gets +1/+1 and has "Whenever this creature attacks, scry 1."
- Wicked — associated with — Enchanted creature gets +1/+1. When this Aura is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, each opponent loses 1 life.
- Young Hero — associated with — Enchanted creature has "Whenever this creature attacks, if its toughness is 3 or less, put a +1/+1 counter on it."
The Commander decks have a seventh role:
- Virtuous — Enchanted creature gets +1/+1 for each enchantment you control.

Rulings
- Roles are colorless enchantment tokens. Each one has the Aura and Role subtypes and the enchant creature ability.[5]
- If a permanent has more than one Role attached to it controlled by the same player, each of those Roles except the one with the most recent timestamp is put into its owner's graveyard. This is a state-based action.
- If two or more Roles controlled by the same player become attached to a permanent at the same time (perhaps due to an effect such as that of Doubling Season), that player chooses which one to keep and which are put into their owners' graveyards.
- A permanent can have multiple Roles attached to it if each one is controlled by a different player.
- Some spells and abilities that create Role tokens require targets. If each target chosen is an illegal target as that spell or ability tries to resolve, it won't resolve. The Role token won't be created.
- In rare cases, a spell or ability might attempt to create a Role token enchanting a permanent that it can't legally enchant (because of an ability like protection from enchantments). In such cases, the Role token isn't created.
- Hexproof and shroud won't prevent a Role from becoming attached to a permanent if the ability creating that Role attached to that permanent doesn't target it.

Trivia
- In vision design, R&D gave a lot of the cards that created role tokens theater themed playtest names as a meta joke about the role mechanic. Most of these were replaced (as intended) but a few ended up in the final set like Gylwain, Casting Director and A Tale for the Ages.[6]
- The Cursed, Wicked and Young Hero roles kept their vision design playtest names all the way through to print.[2]
- The Monster role was originally called Beast.
- The Royal role was originally called Princess.
- The Sorcerer role was originally called Mentor.
- The art for the Wicked // Cursed token was printed the wrong way around.[7]
- Vision design included Animated and Huntsman roles that were not in the final set. These roles, as well as added Chef and Questing roles, appeared on playtest cards in the Las Vegas Unknown Event.[8] Their rules text is as follows:
- Animated (enchants a noncreature artifact): Enchanted permanent is a 4/4 artifact creature.
- Chef: Enchanted creature gets +1/+1 and has "Whenever this creature attacks, create a Food token."
- Huntsman: Enchanted creature gets +1/+1 and has "{T}: Add {G}"
- Questing: Enchanted creature has all the abilities of Questing Beast.
