Phyrexian hybrid mana is — as the name implies — hybrid mana and Phyrexian mana at the same time. It can be paid in three different ways, by paying either one of the two colors or 2 life. It was introduced in Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty on Tamiyo, Compleated Sage.[1]

Description

Compleation is the process by which one becomes Phyrexian. So far, all spells that have Phyrexian hybrid mana are planeswalkers that also have the compleated keyword ability. While Phyrexian mana has been known as difficult to balance, its tie with compleated solves several of its problems. Its link to a planeswalker's starting loyalty decreases the effectiveness of that planeswalker in proportion to the decreased mana cost.

History

Tamiyo, Compleated Sage debuted hybrid Phyrexian mana along with the compleated keyword ability. Paying life allows you cast Tamiyo perhaps a turn sooner, but she'll enter with two fewer loyalty counters. It was next used with Ajani, Sleeper Agent (Dominaria United) before a further two cards were added in Phyrexia: All Will Be One (Lukka, Bound to Ruin and Nahiri, the Unforgiving). At the conclusion of the Phyrexian Arc, only four of the ten color pairs had Phyrexian hybrid mana—two allied color pairs (G/W/P, B/G/P) and two enemy color pairs (B/W/P, G/U/P).

The other six symbols are described in the comprehensive rules, but were never printed on a card: W/U/P, W/B/P, U/B/P, U/R/P, B/R/P & B/G/P.

With New Phyrexia currently phased out of the Multiverse, new cards featuring Phyrexian hybrid mana are unlikely to appear outside of a supplemental set.

Rulings

  • You choose whether to pay colored mana or 2 life as you begin to cast the spell, at the same time you would choose modes or a value for X in a spell.
  • A hybrid Phyrexian mana symbol is counted the same way as a normal mana symbol when determining the mana value of a card. Specifically, Tamiyo's mana value is always 5, even if you pay 2 generic manaGreen manaBlue mana and 2 life to cast her.
  • Phyrexian is not a color nor a type of mana, and players cannot add Phyrexian mana. It's just a symbol that gives you another way to pay for a spell or ability.
