Core Set 2021/Trivia
Mark Rosewater gave his traditional teaser with the following hints.[1]
The new core set has a lot of exciting new cards, including:
- A brand new planeswalker (from a plane we've visited). — Basri Ket (Amonkhet)
- A card that lets you draw half of your library. — Peer into the Abyss
- A +1/+1 tribal lord for a creature type that's never had one. (A creature type with over fifty cards already in print.) — Pack Leader (Dogs)
- A character with a Vanguard card and a legendary creature card gets a second of the latter. — Barrin with Barrin, Tolarian Archmage
- A card with thirty-one different options. — Sublime Epiphany
- A card that gains all activated abilities of a certain subset of cards in a place it’s never done it before. — Conspicuous Snoop
- A card that uses a nonevergreen named ability over twenty years old. — Teferi, Master of Time (phasing)
- A card with the words “battlefield”, “cast”, “creature”, “converted mana cost”, “end of turn”, “exile”, “graveyard” and “mana cost”. — Idol of Endurance
- An aura inspired from a cycle from Urza's Saga block. — Demonic Embrace (the Embraces from Urza's Saga).
- A nonevergreen enchantment subtype returns. — Shrine from Champions of Kamigawa.
Core 2021 also has a number of fun reprints, including:
- A popular character first introduced through flavor text. — Ugin, the Spirit Dragon
- A French Vanilla mythic rare. — Baneslayer Angel
- A popular aura that started as part of a cycle. — Faith's Fetters
- A card with unique protection. — Runed Halo
- Two cards played in tournaments that have been reprinted over twenty times with at least five different pieces of art.— Duress and Shock
- A card that's never previously appeared in a premier set. — Grim Tutor
- A card that's never been reprinted before which has a 2, 3, 5, and 6 all appear on the card. — Massacre Wurm

- A card from the Time Spiral timeshifted sheet. — Tormod's Crypt

- Nine Lives — Jazal Goldmane and Marisi.[2]
Amonkhet
- Basri Ket — a devoted warrior of the God Oketra.
- Basri's Aegis — shows some survivors of the city of Naktamun after the events of the Hour of Devastation.
- Plains (Core Set 2021, #309) — Basri's Showcase Plains.
Dominaria
- Eliminate — referring to Kaervek, antagonist of the Mirage storyline.
- Historian of Zhalfir — Zhalfir.
- Island (Core Set 2021, #310) — Teferi's Showcase Island.
- Jolrael, Mwonvuli Recluse — one of the oldest surviving Zhalfirins, living in the Mwonvuli Jungle.
- Kaervek, the Spiteful — the main antagonist of the Mirage storyline. Also refers to his Breathstealers.
- Liliana, Waker of the Dead — the art is inspired by Liliana, Heretical Healer // Liliana, Defiant Necromancer.
- Liliana's Devotee — refers to Liliana followers.
- Liliana's Standard Bearer — refers to the House of Vess's legacy.
- Liliana's Steward — servant at Vess Manor.
- Llanowar Visionary — Llanowar.
- Mangara, the Diplomat — the wizard known for Mangara's Harmony and his role in the Mirage War.
- Miscast — refers to Barrin of the Tolarian Academy.
- Niambi, Esteemed Speaker — Teferi's daughter.
- Nine Lives: Jedit Ojanen, Mirri and Wasitora.[2]
- Peer into the Abyss — refers to Braids.
- Radha, Heart of Keld — one of the main characters during the Time Spiral crisis and the return to Dominaria.
- Subira, Tulzidi Caravanner — the wife of Teferi.
- Swamp (Core Set 2021, #311) — Liliana's Showcase Swamp.
- Teferi, Master of Time who tries to repair the time rifts of Dominaria.
- Teferi's Protege — a wizard of the Tolarian Academy.
