The Caligo Morass is a marshy delta in Benalia on the northern coast of Dominaria. Once called the Caligo Forest, this bleak and mist-shrouded wetland has long stood as a remote corner of Benalia. It is most notorious as the childhood home of Liliana Vess, whose dark legacy is yet entwined with the area.[1]

Description

Fed by the short, slow-moving, and silt-choked Tiel River, which carries runoff from the Red Iron Mountains, the Caligo Morass spreads out as a brackish expanse of bogs and tangled wetlands. It lies on a narrow coastal plain pressed between the Red Irons to the west and the cold waters of the Sea of Avenant to the east, forming a gloomy buffer zone where thick fog and swamp gas hang low among stunted trees and moss-covered ground.[2][3][4] At the heart of this dismal region sits the small town of Vess, overshadowed by Vess Manor, a once-grand estate whose cracked walls and echoing halls witnessed Liliana's dark past and the supposed betrayal of her family.

History

The Caligo Forest was the place where Liliana Vess grew up in her manor, where she learned the healer's arts, and where she first met the Raven Man while trying to find a cure for her sick brother. This was where Liliana gave her brother Josu a false remedy, which instead turned him into a lich, and from where she first planeswalked away, leaving her household and manor to fall. The surrounding forest gradually fell to rot and ruin, and with the rise of the Cabal under Belzenlok, the entire region — forest, town, and manor — succumbed to corruption and decay. Centuries after fleeing her home, the now-immortal planeswalker necromancer, freed from her contract and servitude to all four demons and the Elder Dragon Nicol Bolas, returned to the morass. The War of the Spark had nevertheless taken a heavy toll on her with the sacrifice of Gideon Jura on her behalf, and the guilds of Ravnica had not put a price on her head. She began rebuilding the manor's husk, using one of her hidden cabins elsewhere on Dominaria as a base while the work continued.[5][6]
