Yasova Dragonclaw was a khan in the past of Tarkir who led the Temur Frontier. She was a powerful shaman, adept at calling upon the elemental forces of the mountains and turning her enemies' power against themselves. After the fall of the khans, Yasova lost her Dragonclaw title and was renamed Yasova First Mother. She had a sabertooth named Alchin who was her companion.[1]

History

Khanfall

Yasova lived 1,280 years ago. She encountered Sarkhan Vol after his arrival in Tarkir's past.[2][3] Originally, she considered Sarkhan a madman and someone with no shame or respect. This was due to his name 'Sar' meaning Great/High/Sky and used to imply that he claimed himself to be higher than all on Tarkir. She also was disgusted with his subservience and quickness in prostrating himself. Yasova is furious at the constant dragon attacks and suffering of her people and is delighted at the prospect of the dragons becoming extinct with Ugin's death. Sarkhan soon discovered that she was a willing pawn of Nicol Bolas who sent her false visions of Tarkir's dragon-free future where the Temur would be supreme. Bolas ordered her to chart the storms that spawned dragons, track them and leave a trail. He promised her that he would kill Ugin and thereby would ensure the extinction of Tarkir's dragons. With this failing in the new timeline and Ugin surviving, Yasova had no choice but to surrender to Atarka, feeding her a mammoth carcass and thus satiating her hunger. Unlike the other khans, which explicitly disbanded their clans, it appears that Yasova retained much of the Temur's identity.[4]

Looking for Ugin

Yasova had to forsake her honorary title. The dragon claw staff that had once announced her position as clan chief was hidden deep in a secret cave, guarded by concealed whisperers. A fake one had been carved and given to Atarka to destroy. She travelled as First Mother of a hunting band, accompanied by her twin granddaughters Naiva and Baishya.[5] Eighteen years after the Khanfall, the latter, who had shamanistic powers, received a vision of the Windfolk. The vision revealed the birth of Ugin and the other Elder Dragons. Realizing that the vision was sent by Ugin himself, the band of Yasova fled the Atarka dragons, who forbade shamanistic practices, and set out to find the Crucible of the Spirit Dragon. On their way, they met the Ghostfire Warrior Tae Jin, who shared Shu Yun's knowledge and additional visions of the origin of Ugin and Nicol Bolas.[6][7][1] Following the death of two Atarka and Ojutai broodlings, the hunting band was confronted by Atarka herself. They were only saved because Tae Jin had a vision of Nicol Bolas, and impressed Atarka with its tale.[8]

A familiar stranger

When the troop reached Ugin's grave, they faced a disguised Nicol Bolas.[9] Bolas was almost able to conquer Naiva's mind. Yasova saved her from Bolas' influence and tricked the elder dragon into thinking that Ugin's grave was targeted by the Immortal Sun to trap him away. This made Bolas flee Tarkir, and because of this Ugin's secret survival was never revealed to him.[10]
