The Arena Base Set or Arena Beginner Set is a MTG Arena-exclusive card set that was released on August 13, 2020.[2]

Description

In August 2020, Magic: The Gathering Arena introduced new player decks. Unlike previous versions, the monocolored decks that each player received after the tutorial matches were designed to stay rotation-proof beyond Standard 2021. The Arena Base Set was created for this exact purpose.[2]

It was announced that the cards of this set would stay legal in Best-of-One matches until further notice. Studio X selected introductory cards that were good for new players learning to play Magic: The Gathering for the very first time and provide some obvious choices for cards players may look to replace when upgrading their decks.

To facilitate the creation of the New Player Experience (NPE) and to transition players smoothly into the normal play experience the designers introduced some MTG Arena-exclusive digital cards.

In March 2022, the Arena Base Set was removed from Standard. The set remains legal in digital formats Alchemy and Historic.[3]
