The inaugural MTGO Spellgrounds was a phantom preconstructed event originally scheduled to be held May 26 to 29, 2025 on Magic: The Gathering Online[1][2]. Players were offered a choice from three random Modern decks, out of six total, with which to play three free best-of-three matches.
Details
The first event in the MTGO Spellgrounds series was originally set to be Legacy from May 5, 2025[1]. However this event was delayed due to technical issues[3], and in the May 13, 2025 Weekly Announcements post it was stated that Spellgrounds would now debut on May 27, 2025[4]. The first event would now be with the Modern format, as had originally been scheduled for that week. The status of the Legacy and Standard events, which were meant to have preceded that one, were not mentioned.
The following weekly announcement post, on May 20, made further adjustments to the event[5]. It would now start on Friday, May 23, 2025, and run over the weekend. This was so as not to clash with preview events for Final Fantasy; successive events would follow the Monday to Wednesday schedule established in the original post. The decks for the new inaugural event would be a mix from the most recent MOCS Showcase competition, and the recently updated New to MTGO Modern Gauntlet League. The latter would have their Sideboards adjusted for the Spellgrounds event.
