FNM card
FNM promos (also Friday Night Magic promotional cards) are foil promotional cards provided by Wizards of the Coast as additional prizes at Friday Night Magic events.
Program
Since the program started in 2000, there has been a new promotional card each month, except during the first half of 2001. Originally, three cards were provided, to be distributed to "the winner of the tournament, the fairest player, and a random participant who has not been rewarded already". From 2005 through 2014, each Friday Night Magic event was allocated four promo cards. During that period, one card each was assigned to the first- and second-place participants and the remaining two were randomly distributed among the other players who had not already received a prize card. Starting in 2015, distribution is left to the event organizer's discretion, although WotC provides guidelines to ensure every player has a chance to obtain the promotional card.
Beginning in January 2008, all FNM promos feature new, alternate art. Previously, the artwork would be chosen from among previous printings of the card. According to the policy stated in July 2011, prize cards should be selected from cards currently in Standard.
Starting in October 2017, double-sided tokens replaced regular promotional cards as the prize of FNM.[1] While the experiment with these special premium tokens was aimed at fostering a fun, inclusive environment for Friday Night Magic, the real-world results did not match up to Wizards' expectations. That, coupled with the community's negative feedback, led them to reverse their decision in April 2018.[2] These are now chosen later in the process. Combined with many of the Play Design changes, it should lead to more tier 1 cards and fewer misses.[3] Starting with Dominaria, the FNM promos also feature a dark text box with a planeswalker symbol watermark. The collector number lines up with its place in the main set, where it's also being printed.[4]
From Core Set 2020 onward, dedicated FNM cards are replaced by a card from the WPN promo pack, distributed at the discretion of the stores.[5]
