The Coliseum Island is an island in the swamps outside Aphetto, once the site of the Grand Coliseum until its annihilation by Karona.
History
Following Cabal City's destruction during the Battle for the Mirari, the original Cabal pits were lost. Therefore, the Cabal Patriarch organized the construction of a new, even larger arena, a Grand Coliseum in the swamps near Aphetto. The building efforts were overseen by Phage and were designed to attract visitors from across the continent to witness its games. When Phage located Coliseum Island, it was the site of a ramshackle village with a few cowing inhabitants. She gave them the ultimatum of abandoning their homes, becoming part of the coliseum slave crew, or dying. They rejected her proposal, and she promptly wiped them all out and leveled their village utterly. The island was then used as the site for the building project, a "clean slate". Phage even dredged the waters around the island to make them clear and added pathways and bridges through the swamp to connect it to the Otarian road network.[1]
Later, when Karona arrived at the Grand Coliseum looking for Kuberr, she drained the area of mana. When Kuberr, Kamahl and Lowallyn escaped through a portal to Aphetto, Karona proceeded to annihilate the rest of the coliseum in a rage, leaving Coliseum island as nothing but a field of ashes, a desolate mound amid the endless swamp mist. When Karona left Dominaria, the plane's magic went with her, including that which had cleared Coliseum Island from the swamp. Without its supporting magic, the island sank back into the muck to be reclaimed fully by the swamp.[2]
