Altanak is a creature on Duskmourn that is summoned by saying its name three times.
Description
Altanak is a massive insectoid beast with giant claws, a glowing chitinous head, and large, wicked mandibles.[1][2]
History
Altanak is a fusion of human and insect flesh, one of Valgavoth's earliest experiments during the rise of the House.[3] As Valgavoth's strength and influence grew, so did his twisted creations, with Altanak standing out as a grim testament to his unchecked power. Its name, Altanak, echoes the distorted noises it made while being brought into existence — noises that some survivors believe were an attempt to utter a spell meant to end Valgavoth's life. Because of this legend, there are those desperate enough to try to reconstruct that lost incantation, using the creature's name as a starting point for their forbidden rites.
But repeating Altanak's name comes with a terrible cost: for Altanak, the very sound of its name is a cruel reminder of the torment it endured at Valgavoth's hands.[3] Worse still, it possesses the sharpest hearing of any being on Duskmourn, able to catch the faintest whisper carried through the halls. Survivors who dare to speak the name too often may soon find themselves hunted by Altanak itself, driven by a desperate need to silence the echoes of its suffering.
