World is a supertype that is currently only found on enchantments. All existing cards with this supertype were printed as being Enchant World cards (local enchantments). They were last seen in Visions. There are a total of 26 cards with the World supertype. [1] Nowadays, plane cards for Planechase have a similar functionality.

Change

From William Jockusch, Research & Development:

“  We removed Enchant World cards as part of a general drive to simplify the rules. Enchant Worlds by themselves added only a small amount of rules complexity, but we thought they also added only a small amount of interest. We felt the space they take up in the rulebook could better be used on something else.

We are constantly doing a balancing act between keeping the game interesting and keeping it easy to learn. This is one case where 'easy to learn' won out.[2]

Rulings

  • Permanents put into a graveyard as a result of the "world rule" are not "destroyed" and thus can't be regenerated.
  • No player gets priority between the time a world permanent enters the battlefield and the time the "world rule" sends the world permanents that have been on the battlefield the longest to their owners' graveyards. In other words, they can't be sacrificed, returned to their owners' hands, or otherwise affected in response.
  • Unlike the “legend rule,” the “world rule” doesn't care about the names of permanents. It cares only about the world supertype.
  • Note that if more than one legendary permanent with the same name is on the battlefield, they’re all put into their owners’ graveyards, but if more than one world permanent is on the battlefield, the newest one is not put into its owner’s graveyard.
