Part of Urborg, Burning Isles, the Domains

Vhelnish is an underground kingdom of undead on the Dominarian island of Urborg, once ruled by the Lich Lord Dralnu.

Description

The pathway to Vhelnish opens into a large, deep cavern, with water leading the way. The cavern is immense, and all around the perimeter of the space open smaller caves. Some of these passages empty mere trickles of water across the sloping floor, but a few gush regular rivers. The streams wend through deep channels, join with other streams, and at last plunge into the wide pit at the center of the chamber. All the light in the cavern comes from that pit. It glows crimson, the color of bare magma. A constant column of steam gushes upward from it, a result of the waters that pour into the well, falling until they stick the world’s hot soul. The incessant steam has built up a massive collection of stalactites above the pit. Sultry winds coil about the stalactites, adding minutely to them before slipping upward through cracks in the ceiling. Within the stalactites, lights glow. Yellow and green, orange and purple, windows shine in their thousands. No solid fingers of stone, these structures are inverted towers. Instead of yearning skyward, they plunge toward fiery depths. Within their dripping walls are chambers and stairways, libraries and staterooms, garrisons and guardhouses. Walkways stretch from tower to tower. Balconies perch above the reeling deeps. Here and there, just visible in shifting shadows, are the unliving inhabitants of the city.[1]

History

According to Dralnu, the city had previously been the palace of the lich lady that reanimated him, which she just used to display her collection of the undead. After he had slain her, Dralnu transformed it into an actual city, giving his minions a sense of purpose. It is unknown exactly when and how the kingdom came into being, but it was likely ruled by Dralnu for centuries. The underground palace had not been seen since the lich lord's death.

When the panther warrior Marivel discovered the lost city, she learned from its ancient knowledge to become one of Urborg's most powerful necromancers and the leader of the Free Urborg resistance.[2] Sixty years after the Mending, Free Urborg used Vhelnish as a hideaway, even though it was haunted by the Cabal Specter Urguros.[3]
