The Old Voda Sea is the current name of the sea surrounding Sarpadia on the plane of Dominaria.

Description

The Old Voda sea lies off the coast of Sarpadia, at the south end of the deep-sea trench. These waters once hosted the grand Vodalian empire, but this nation had to be abandoned by the merfolk during the Fall of the Sarpadian Empires.

Deep in the Old Voda part of the deep-sea trench lies Dromar's Cavern, an ancient Vodalian tomb that once housed the blue primeval dragon Dromar.[1]

The ruins of the Svyelunite Temple can also be found here.

History

The sea surrounds the isolated continent, and its waters were the home of the Vodalian Merfolk empire. This sea used to simply go by the name Voda Sea, home of the Vodalian merfolk. Ruled by a militant, magic-wielding upper class, much of the history of Vodalian merfolk is unknown.[2] Many temples to Svyelun, goddess of the Pearl Moon, dotted the ocean floor.[3] The Vodalian emperor died under unknown circumstances, leaving Empress Galina III as the ruler.[4] When the homarids invaded their territory, Marshall Karel Volnikov led the Vodalian army against them. The merfolk initially succeeded but were later overwhelmed by the homarids' capacity to breed and flourish in the cooling waters.[5] Without medical supplies and no stored food source, Vodalia was abandoned, and many of its subjects followed Empress Galina III through a portal to far away Etlan Shiis, where they renamed the sea in the southeastern part of the Domains using the same name - the Voda Sea. The original sea around Sarpadia then took on the name "Old Voda Sea" in memory of its merfolk origins.

Trivia

  • The name comes from the word "voda", originating in various Slavic languages, which means "water" in English.
  • The Voda Sea shares its name with Slinn Voda, a massive leviathan whom the merfolk appeased soon after they arrived in New Vodalia.[6] It bears a city on its back and will rise to meet any true threat to the Vodalian Empire.
