You are Chandra Nalaar, an eleven-year-old living on Kaladesh. You chafe at the prospect of spending your life as an inventor, building things for proper society. You prefer taking things apart - often with your fists. You know that tinkering is not for you, and you just want to find a way to be yourself.
”
There are five matches in which the player represents Chandra against a series of computer-controlled opponents. Decks start at 40 cards, with 5 added each match for a total of 60 for the final match.
In the first match, Chandra (monored) faces the Kaladesh Artificers.
“
You find yourself in yet another in a long series of scrapes with the authorities of Kaladesh, who don't understand you. This time, however, something unexpected happens--when they corner you, fire spontaneously erupts from your hands.[5]
Thanks to your newfound fire magic, you manage to escape from the authorities, but your fiery gift does not go unnoticed. Kaladesh soldiers, led by the formidable Captain Baral, pursue you through the city.[5]
”
Chandra's second mission
In the second match, Chandra faces Foundry Security. They are represented by an artifact-focused monored deck.
“
With Captain Baral's soldiers hot on your heels, you duck into an artifact foundry to hide. But as soon as you enter, a host of automated artifacts detect your presence and come to life. They don't look very friendly.[5]
The good news is that you're getting the hang of your gift of pyromancy. The bad news? You've scorched dozens of highly valuable artifacts and burned down the foundry. You can bet Captain Baral's forces will redouble their efforts to find you now.[5]
”
Chandra's third mission
In the third match, Chandra practices her fire magic against Kaladesh wildlife, which are represented by a monogreen deck.
“
After the destruction of the foundry--completely accidental, but admittedly due to your fire magic--you and your family flee to the countryside to hide from Baral. The wild creatures out here scare you at first, but you soon realize that a beast attack is just another chance to practice your pyromancy.[5]
Maybe it's not so bad being on the lam. You've been tangling with beasts and honing your pyromancy, and your family has found a comfortable village to stay in. As long as Baral's forces don't catch your trail, maybe even a wanted pyromancer can enjoy a bit of freedom.[5]
”
Chandra's fourth mission
In the fourth match, Chandra faces Baral's Lieutenant, represented by a white weenie deck.
“
How quickly everything can fall apart. Without warning, Kaladesh authorities storm the village. Before you know it, your father lies dead, the village burns, and Baral has framed you for the destruction. His lieutenant advances to take you prisoner.[5]
You fight bravely to avenge your father, but the soldiers overwhelm you. During the battle, it appears your mother is also slain. Baral intends to make an example out of you. The authorities lead you back to the city to await execution.[5]
”
Chandra's fifth mission
In the final match of the campaign, Chandra faces the monoblue Captain Baral.
“
Even as your executioner looms over you, the grief over losing your parents--and Baral's stifling countermagic--prevents you from fighting back. But one last spark of defiance still burns inside you, and it's begging to be freed.[5]
The threat of death at the hands of Captain Baral causes your Planeswalker spark to ignite. In a burst of flame, you leave Kaladesh behind. Your blazing arrival on the plane of Regatha attracts the attention of fire monks from the Keral Keep monastery. They take you in, and it is there that your pyromantic training begins.[5]
