As of December 2023, Wizards of the Coast prohibits the use of generative AI in Magic art.[1] However, marketing materials published by Wizards since then have also used generative AI, and Wizards has not indicated a similar prohibition for such cases.[2]

Additionally, an ongoing lawsuit alleges that Midjourney used Magic artwork improperly to train a generative AI model.[3]

Artist AI policy

In the summer of 2023, Wizards of the Coast published a Dungeons & Dragons product, Glory of the Giants. Buyers noticed that several pieces of artwork showed signs of generative AI usage, and artist Ilya Shkipin responded on social media to admit to using such software to "polish" his artwork.[4]

On December 19, 2023, the Dungeons & Dragons and Magic websites posted statements indicating that artists for those properties were prohibited from using generative AI.[5][1]

Use of AI in marketing materials

One month later, a marketing image for Ravnica Remastered was posted on social media. Several elements within the image were generated by AI. After three days of denials, social media representatives for Wizards admitted that the image was generated by an outside vendor.[6]

The official website posted a new statement regarding interactions with vendors. Unlike the previous policy for artists, this statement said that the company "wants to get better at understanding whether and how AI is used in the creative process", and that they aimed to "always come down on the side of human made art and artists".[2]

Andersen v. Stability AI Ltd.

In December 2023, a lawsuit was filed against Stability AI, Midjourney, and DeviantArt by a group of artists, including Magic artist Karla Ortiz. The suit alleges that those artists' works, including Magic artwork, were used to train AI models in ways that violate the intellectual property rights attached to that artwork.[3] The suit is ongoing, and the trial is set to begin on September 8, 2026.[7]
