Frank Karsten is a former Magic: The Gathering Pro Player from the Netherlands and a member of the Hall of Fame, inducted in 2009. Karsten is also a member of the Magic coverage team, initially providing color commentary at Grand Prix tournaments and text coverage in Grand Prix and Pro Tours.
Description
Karsten is known as a very methodical and thorough strategist within the game, using his doctorate in mathematics to write many articles on deckbuilding probabilities.
In August 2022, Karsten started to write a new weekly article series on the revamped Magic.gg site: Metagame Mentor.[1] This column focuses on the development of the Magic metagame in the different formats, based on recently played tournaments in tabletop Premier Play, Magic Online and Magic Arena.
Professional play
Karsten debuted on the Pro Tour as a member of the Dutch National team in 2000, finishing 17th. He competed in nearly 80 Pro Tours, making the Top 8 at Nagoya 2005, and the 2005 World Championships|2005]] and 2008 World Championships, displaying his skill in multiple formats. He was Voted as "The Fanatic" for the Magic Invitational in 2006 and 2007.[2] He has also reached the Top 8 of Grand Prix tournaments on eight different occasions.
In May 2024, Karsten won the first Disney Lorcana European Challenge in Lille, France.[3]
