MaRo's Edge of Eternities Teaser

Mark Rosewater gave his traditional teaser for Edge of Eternities with the following hints to the contents of the main set.[1]

First up, here are some things you can expect:

Here are snippets of rules text you’ll see:

Here are some creature type lines from the set:

Finally, here are some names in the set:

Magic Story

  • Sekhar is a reference to the Chandrasekhar, the maximum mass of a stable white dwarf star.
  • In Episode 4, the story provides an in-universe explanation for the name of Hawking radiation. Since Hawking radiation is produced by paired photons, it is named after squadron hawks, which likewise always stick together.[3]
  • The name of the Eulalia system in Compact Me to Zero is a reference to "Eulalia" ("Victory"), the war cry used by the fighting hares and badgers in the Redwall series.[4]
  • The Guns of Kavaron, mentioned in Episode 5, are a play on The Guns of Navarone.
  • The Kav "jemadar" rank (Episode 5), harks back to Star Trek's Jem'Hadar, which have similar visuals to the Kav.
  • The naming of the Weft is a play on warp. In weaving, warp and weft are the two basic thread directions that form a fabric. The warp threads run lengthwise (vertically) and are held taut on the loom, while the weft threads run crosswise (horizontally) and are interlaced through the warp.

Cultural references

For Edge of Eternities, R&D intentionally scaled back the amount of allusions to specific works within the science fiction genre and instead focused on broader space opera tropes, as with the increase in Universes Beyond sets adapting non-Magic works, direct allusions to them in Magic-universe sets felt redundant.[5][6] This was a departure from previous sets such as Outlaws of Thunder Junction and Duskmourn: House of Horror, which some fans had criticized for their large numbers of direct references to works in their respective genres.

Card(s) Reference Notes
Close Encounter Close Encounters of the Third Kind
The Dominion Bracelet The Lensman series by American author E. E. "Doc" Smith.[5] The Lens in the series is a psionic amplifier and a badge of honor.
Lost in Space Lost in Space
Tractor Beam First coined as such in Spacehounds of IPC (1931) by E. E. "Doc" Smith. A device that can attract one object to another from a distance, popularized by Star Trek.
Vote Out Among Us The depiction resembles the armless cartoon astronauts of the game and it alludes to the game's main mechanic of voting out suspected imposters.

Notes

  1. The card actually says "red creature cards," not "red cards."
  2. The original version of the teaser had "Legendary Creature - Kavu Pilot", because Mark didn't realize that Tannuk, Memorial Ensign had already been previewed. When he changed it, he forgot to remove Legendary.[2]
