The Caverns of Despair were a system of caves and tunnels underneath Arboria in the south-west portion of Jamuraa on Dominaria.[1]

Description

The Caverns of Despair was a system of caves that stretched beneath southern Arboria, with one entrance located beneath Shauku's ruined castle, and another in a cave opening in the mountainside deep in the forest. The Caverns were haunted by the Ghosts of the Damned, wandered by the lethal Floral Spuzzem, patrolled by Akron Legionnaires, and guarded by the loyal but unintelligent Crimson Kobolds. The Caverns also worked as a prison for the Cosmic Horror which had fallen from the stars there and had become enslaved by the vampire Shauku. Shauku gleaned much cryptic knowledge from the horror, which she kept trapped by a ring of fire, sawing off its growing tentacles to prevent it from spreading outside the ring. The kobolds kept burning the ring of fire. In exchange, the foul small creatures ate the corpses of the dead that Shauku drained of blood. The caverns also hosted growths of large, glowing crystals, which Shauku could utilize as an Amber Prison. The halls of the caverns were confusing and made of an organic, hexagonal material, similar to a honeycomb. The material was soft and pliable, and a simple knife could shave off. The crystals contained sweet-tasting nectar, but eating it warped one's biology and turned a curious taster into a Spuzzem.

History

The Caverns of Despair formed in ancient times when a Falling Star impacted in southern Arboria. The organic Cosmic Horror built the hexagonal tunnels around itself as it expanded. A castle was built atop the impact crater, presumably lured by the psionic presence of the horror, but the castle was eventually abandoned and fell into ruin. Shauku came to the ruin much later and discovered the horror underneath. She enslaved the creature and put Aron Legionnaires and kobolds into service guarding it.

In 3334 AR, the Caverns of Despair were visited by a party consisting of Jedit Ojanen, Adira Strongheart, Jasmine Boreal, and Adira's Circle of Seven. They freed the Cosmic Horror, which summoned another Falling Star to annihilate the caverns, an act of self-destruction. Although the meteorite obliterated the castle ruin, the caverns, and the horror, Shauku secretly escaped. There was nothing left after the impact but a large, barren crater.[1]
