Commander's Arsenal is a product in the Commander series that was released by Wizards of the Coast in November 2012.[2] It was announced at the Magic panel at the San Diego Comic-Con on July 14, 2012.
History
Mark Rosewater stated that a new line of products was conceived for the Commander format because of the success of Commander. He predicted that there would be a Commander product every year, and that those future products were likely to be complete decks. However due to the unexpected demand and related timing issues, Commander's Arsenal ended up being a less streamlined collection. "The best way to describe it is a treasure trove of Commander goodies", explained Rosewater.[3]
Because of the out-of-order nature of the release, it was made a premium product with relatively limited print run. The massive (up to four time MSRP) price hikes applied by many stores as a result disappointed many players who had hoped for greater accessibility of the included cards.
Contents
Commander's Arsenal includes:[4]
- 18 premium foil cards (some that have never been foiled before, some with new art)
- 10 oversized premium foil cards
- 120 Ultra Pro foil card sleeves
- 20 double-sided "Battle Marks" with a + on one side and a - on the other, for use as +1/+1 counters and −1/−1 counters.
- A double-wheeled life counter that goes up to 99
Included cards
10 oversized versions of popular commanders are included, selected to have a balance among both their colors and numbers of colors.[5] While none of the oversized cards have new art, this printing of Sliver Queen is its first in the modern frame.
- Sliver Queen
- Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund
- Mayael the Anima
- Zur the Enchanter
- Grimgrin, Corpse-Born
- Brion Stoutarm
- Glissa, the Traitor
- Godo, Bandit Warlord
- Azusa, Lost but Seeking
- Karn, Silver Golem
Notably, Sliver Queen and Karn are both on the Reserved List. Since both are printed here in oversized form, they are not "functionally identical" nor are they tournament legal, making them allowed under the promise.
All 18 standard-sized cards are included in premium foil. For most included cards, this is their first printing in premium foil, and most cards which already had premium versions have been given new or previously hard-to-find art:
- Chaos Warp#
- Command Tower*
- Decree of Pain*
- Desertion#†
- Diaochan, Artful Beauty#†
- Dragonlair Spider#
- Duplicant*
- Edric, Spymaster of Trest#
