Daghatar was the khan of the Abzan tribe on Tarkir at the point in time when Sarkhan returned to the past to save Ugin from Nicol Bolas.
Description
As Khan, Daghatar relied on careful strategies to achieve his goals.[1] He constantly analyzed his surroundings, which made him seem aloof to his people. He rode on a black ibex, and he was clad in elaborate mail crafted from dragon scales. The head of his mace Remembrance was hewn from amber, in which spirits of Abzan ancestors was bound. He was the first Khan to submit to the power of the dragons and gave up Abzan's clan name, their tradition of raising tree spirits, and the title of Khan to save his people from extinction.
History
After Sarkhan Vol saved Ugin's life and sent the dragon into a deep slumber a thousand years before the present day, the dragon storms of Tarkir increased in intensity, generating the highest number of dragons the plane had ever seen. Dromoka and her brood thus laid a systematic genocide on the Abzan, to the point of utter desperation. Daghatar, consulting the amber relic known as Remembrance, the last remnants of the first kin-tree holding the spirits of the first ancestors, decided to hold an audience with Dromoka. The ancestral spirits inhabiting the mace had a plan to betray the parley and surprise Dromoka with an ambush, hoping to kill her in a moment of vulnerability.
Instead, Daghatan learned of the reasons why Dromoka massacred his people; the dragons saw the practice of kin-trees and raising ancestor spirits as an affront to life and the natural order, and though they admired the compassion and tenacity of the Abzan themselves, they were dedicated to eliminating what they saw as necromancy. Now realizing he had a critical choice for the future of his people, Daghatan ignored the dictates of the Remembrance spirits and shattered the relic, releasing the spirits to the afterlife. This pleased the dragon, but it was not enough for a lasting peace. To further solidify the pact with Dromoka, Daghatan ordered the end of all kin-trees and spirit ancestor practices, the very heart of Abzan traditions, thus forging a pact with the dragon.
Dromoka forbids the use of the words "clan" and "khan", with the people living under her having no formal name of their own, but rather taking the dragon's name as their new descriptor. "True" Abzan who refused to follow Daghatan's edict and Dromoka's rule kept holding their ground for a while, under the newly appointed khan Reyhan. However, when Reyhan went to consult with the khans of the other tribes in Jeskai territory, Ojutai and Silumgar and their broods attacked the meeting, killing Reyhan and thus the last chance of the "true" Abzan to survive. Daghatar and the others under Dromoka were thus left as the sole survivors of the former Abzan.[2] However, the practice of ancestor worship persisted in secret, despite repercussions from the dragons.
