Urborg was a city on the island of the same name, controlled by the lich Nevinyrral. It was at war with Bogardan.
Description
The City of Urborg was a nightmarish citadel located on the haunted island of Urborg, a land known for its fetid swamps, perpetual twilight skies, and dark sorcery. In the heart of this forsaken land rose the city itself — a monstrous gothic fortress cast in shades of obsidian and bone, its spiked towers clawing at the ashen skies.[1]
History
During the Dark Age, Urborg was ruled by the infamous lich king Nevinyrral, a master necromancer whose ambitions knew no bounds. Nevinyrral's laws were enforced by an elite cadre of deathless enforcers, wielding cursed artifacts of unimaginable power. The streets of Urborg teemed with the undead, and magic saturated every stone, binding the city to its master's will.
Under Nevinyrral’s dominion, Urborg was both a sanctuary for necromancers and a bastion of terror for neighboring lands. His obsession with dominion led him to launch an unprovoked campaign against Bogardan, a volcanic realm ruled by enigmatic, godlike beings of flame and fury.
The assault on Bogardan was disastrous. Nevinyrral’s undead legions were no match for the fiery wrath of the Bogardans. Enraged, the masters of Bogardan retaliated, sending flights of hellkites to darken the skies over Urborg while their fire masters surrounded the city. With terrible might, the Bogardan lords struck the earth, triggering a catastrophic volcanic eruption beneath Urborg itself.
Realizing his city was doomed and unwilling to let his accumulated power fall into enemy hands, Nevinyrral made a final, desperate act. Channeling every shred of his immense magical might, he poured his essence into a disk-shaped phylactery — Nevinyrral's Disk. In a single blinding moment, he detonated it, unleashing a cataclysm that obliterated the city and vaporized everything within a ten-mile radius.
In the aftermath, nothing remained of Urborg but scorched earth and ghostly echoes. Many lich lords have since laid claim to Nevinyrral's mantle, but none possess a fraction of his dread power. The tale of Urborg endures as a grim warning of hubris and the price of unchecked ambition.
Even today, necromancers speak of Urborg with a mix of awe and fear, and ruins rumored to have survived its annihilation continue to attract seekers of dark power — though few return.[2][3]
