Nathan Steuer is a Magic: The Gathering professional and the former World Champion.[1]

History

Born in 2002, Steuer was born after multiple Hall of Famers have already completed their tenure in the game. Having picked up the game at summer camp, he was already playing for his first Top 8 in Grand Prix San Diego in 2015 at the age of 13. His first Premier level event was Mythic Championship VI Richmond One of the youngest members of the 2022 World Championship field but already one of the most-feared opponents online, Steuer won both the 2021 MOCS Season 3 and 2022 MOCS Season 2 — the latter already putting him into the 2023 World Championship alongside teammate Sam Rolph. Steuer had been knocking at the door for years as he has risen through the ranks, appearing in four out of the previous five MOCS events. He qualified for the 2022 World Championship as a top Challenger player via WCQPs.

In the Top 4 of the 2022 World Championship, Steuer's Grixis deck was pitted against three Esper decks. Each of the players were of the newer generation of success: despite each player having at least a decade-long record, all of their Pro Tour claims to fame prior to this tournament were from the last three years for a top of 5 Top Finishes amongst them.[2]

Eli Kassis served as Steuer's nemesis for the tournament, having defeated him in Round 14 and the Top 4 opening match; despite this, Steuer knocked out the other two Esper players and made a comeback against a first match deficit to triumph.[3]

The return to paper Magic did nothing to stop the primarily digital Steuer, as he locked a Top 8 at Philadelphia, and won in Minneapolis. This would be his third and fourth 2023 Worlds invitation[4], and his win would be the first time a single player won two Premier level events in the same season since Kai Budde in 2002 - the year Steuer was born.

Steuer's Player Spotlight card Duelist of the Mind is featured in the 2024 set Outlaws of Thunder Junction.[5]
