Research on the Dominia-Dominaria confusion

Legends set

  • Initially, the Legends expansion was conceptualized as a multiversal setting[1] (without any confusion on the matter - John Tynes and Scott Hungerford were consistent on the difference between Dominia and Dominaria): "This set collects many of the mythical places and personalities in the Magic multiverse. It focuses on the Legends, the great figures of Dominia’s history whose stories unfold in other expansions."
  • Yet, in time, as the stories were developed, apparently all references to characters or even to non-legendary cards from the set have been placed on Dominaria.
    • Are there any exceptions? If so, we would have to be more careful with inferences - for instance, the wiki lists Nethya from Remove Soul (Legends) as a secondary character from Dominaria.
to do: go through all the Legends cards in detail & and their use in stories
  • 2000s Legends set page doesn't mention lore
  • 2010s Legends set page (the stories have been heavily developed at this point) shifts focus from Dominia to Dominaria (though it mentions both):
"Like any other world, Dominia has its Legends. In this new expansion you'll meet Johan, Gabriel Angelfire, Sivitri Scarzam, Hunding, and many more. As you delve into Dominia's mythology, you'll discover 310 new spells, artifacts, and creatures with the power to defy death. So enter the world of Legends and join the heroes in the struggle for Dominaria!"
  • Note: the use of the word "world" here might be confusing, as it can make one think of a single universe or even single planet, but the phrase "the world of Dominia" was a common early phrase meaning "the multiverse" (both were in use at the same time). This kind of potentially confusing terminology is not uncommon in fiction (for instance Marvel Cinematic Universe is really a Multiverse), not to mention the troubles with defining such terms in real-life cosmology.
  • Also, while Sivitri Scarzam has been established as a being capable of travelling between planes (and since then, a planeswalker), and theoretically could have come to Domainaria from some other plane, everything concrete we knew of her has been established in the context of the history of Dominaria
  • current 2020s Legends set archive description, brings only the multiverse back to our attention, but doesn't explicitly show anything multiversal - to the contrary, it even drops Sivitri:
"The Multiverse contains many worlds with many heroes: Johan, Gabriel Angelfire, Dakkon Blackblade, Hunding, and more. This powerful set introduces new spells, artifacts, and creatures, all steeped in the mythology of their worlds."
