Template:En

From MTG Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

Provides an "en dash" character, as opposed to the longer "em dash" (—), both of which are longer than a hyphen (-). If you are looking at this template page already, you may simply copy and paste the dash into the desired page rather than use the template.

This dash is approximately the width of an N (hence "en" dash), and is most often used for ranges of values such as numbers or dates. It can also be used for:

  • separation or linkage between two concepts like "the spell–permanent distinction" or "Finkel beat Garfield 2–0"
  • for true grammarians, between the parts of a compound adjective where one part is itself a multi-word compound, such as "post–Phyrexian Invasion status quo", whereas "post-Mending" uses a simple hyphen

Because this cannot be typed on a typical keyboard, en dashes are much more common in typeset (printed) material, whereas hyphens are often used in digital or other text.[1]
